Obituary

Walter Powell

January 21, 1949 - September 2, 2023

Walter Powell, age 74, passed away on September 2, 2023, in Lincoln.

Walt served his country as a Gunner’s Mate in the United States Navy and was incredibly proud when his two grandsons followed in his footsteps.  He continued his public service with a career in law enforcement as a Trooper on the Nebraska State Patrol and a Special Agent with the BNSF.  After retiring from full-time employment, Walt was able to pursue his passion in horticulture with the City of Lincoln Parks Department and his green thumb can be seen throughout the city and in his own yard, fondly known as Powell Gardens.

Walking through life side by side with his wife of almost 52 years, Walt never hesitated to offer a helping hand or lend advice to anyone who might need it.  He was a friend to many, a grandpappy to four, and daddy to just one.

Walt is survived by his wife, Kris, daughter Stephanie (Rich) Graves of New Braunfels, TX, four grandchildren, Trevor, Aiden, Abrianna and Evye Graves, and fur baby Abigail Grace, as well as extended family.  He was welcomed into Heaven by his parents, Neal and Irene Powell and his sister, Ann Deane.

Interment will take place on Tuesday, October 3rd, at 1:30 p.m. at the Omaha National Cemetery, 14250 Schram Rd., Omaha.

When Walt started with Nebraska Highway Patrol, he stayed with us for a few weeks. Every afternoon before his shift we had a cup of tea and nice chat. I think it’s from that time that I became his “favorite sister-in-law.” Two rose bushes he selected especially for my garden will be living memorials to our relationship. I’ll miss my “favorite brother-in-law.”

I worked with “Blue Arrow” while he was State Trooper and one fond memory is flying with pilot Roy Swoboda in the NEW NSP Helicopter and Walt asking what happened if engine died and Roy shutting off engine and Walt being white fingered as he begged him to restart!
