Obituary

Sharlyn Houtchens Stock

April 23, 1950 - October 30, 2021

Sharlyn Houtchens Stock was born on April 23, 1950, in Greeley, Colorado to her loving parents, Harlan and Shirley Houtchens.  A wonderful childhood shared with her brother Darrell included a love of music, friends, and school.  Shar adored time spent with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins celebrating holidays.  Shar graduated from Greeley West HS in 1968.

Shar went to college at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, following in the tradition of many in her family.  It was at school that she met her future husband Darrell Stock.  Falling in love, they were married on August 7, 1971.  A proud Tri-Delt, Shar graduated from UNL in 1972 with a degree in Music Education.

Supporting Darrell as he got a law degree, she worked at the University in Admissions.  Soon after Darrell began his law career, they started their family.  A son, Brad, was born in 1976 and daughter Audra in 1979.  They truly became Shar’s world as she built a wonderful home that all could flourish in.  Over the years, she made many wonderful friendships through her involvement in organizations like PEO, Wesleyan Women in Theology, and the Bryan Board.

Shar and Darrell have been active members of Trinity United Methodist Church for almost 50 years.  Shar served on every committee possible, was a member of the vocal and bell choirs, proud founding member of Seekers, and served as President of the United Methodist Women “forever” (her words).  Through their church life, they met so many dear friends and ultimately gained a daughter-in-law.

As the kids started their families, Shar spent time supporting Darrell at this law office, working on estates, and handling the books.  Darrell and Shar enjoyed their time in Arizona in the winter, celebrating each day with happy hour on the front porch.  Eating out and spending Sunday afternoons at ArborLinks were also time well spent together.

Shar’s ultimate role started in 2003 with the birth of his first grandchild Colton.  “Nana” was the role she was born to play.  Four more grandchildren – Bennett, Benjamin, Harrison, and Caroline – followed and were all spoiled by her love, support, and “magic”.  Every kid should be blessed to have a “nana” in their lives.

On October 30, 2021, Shar died peacefully surrounded by her loving family after an inspiring four-year battle with cancer.

Shar is preceded in death by Harlan and Shirley Houtchens, parents; Lyle and Margaret Stock, father-in-law and mother -in-law; and Darrell Houtchens, brother.  Survived by her loving husband, Darrell Stock of Lincoln, NE; children Brad and Dawn Stock of Gretna, NE, Audra (Stock) and Andrew Morris of Leawood, KS; grandchildren, Colton (“Coco”), Bennett (“Benny”), Benjamin (“Benj”), Harrison (“Harry”) and her “Sweet Caroline”; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dave and Sharron Stock of Ashland, NE, Ron and Deb Stock of Portland, OR; her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, who she adored as her own children; and the many others she happily supported as “mom”.

What a wonderful and kind lady! We were next door neighbors of the Houtchens. Our family moved into our home in November 1960. There are a myriad of wonderful childhood memories of Shar and the Houtchens. One in particular was Shar’s bright red 1968 Pontiac GTO! You’re each in our thoughts and prayers.

I was sad to read about Shar. I remember and celebrate our time together making music in choir and many memorable visits to the Stock’s. I hope for peace for all of you. Kim Clabaugh
