Ruth Emily Lohmeyer was born June 13, 1957 in Washington, KS to Eldred and Verena (Bott) Schaefer. She was baptized on June 23, 1957 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bremen, Kansas, and confirmed her faith in her loving Savior there on April 4, 1971.
Ruth attended elementary school at Immanuel Lutheran School and graduated from Marysville High School in 1975. While in high school, Ruth was the 1974 Kansas FFA Sweetheart and later was crowned homecoming queen. She graduated from Saint John’s College in Winfield, Kansas, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1983. Then in 1987, she earned a Master’s degree in Education, Counseling and School of Psychology from Wichita State University. Ruth was director of admissions and served on the Board of Regents at St. Johns college where she met Neil Lohmeyer, the basketball coach.
On January 2, 1988, Ruth was united in marriage to Neil Lohmeyer at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where Ruth was a college counselor at UMKC. They were blessed with two children, Mark (1989) and Sarah (1992). Ruth stayed home with the kids, led their homeschooling, taught Sunday school, and made every day fun. The family moved to Columbia, Missouri, in 1996 where Ruth started her career as a high school counselor. They moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, in 2001 to be closer to family and for quality Lutheran education. Ruth loved running and completed several races including over 11 marathons. She qualified and finished the Boston Marathon in 2004. Ruth was a natural born leader and mentored many people as counselor team leader at North East High School. Her enthusiasm and love for people led to her winning Nebraska’s High School Counselor of the Year in 2013, and being honored as a top 5 finalist for National High School Counselor of the Year. In 2015, Ruth helped to build the program at The Career Academy.
Ruth was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and trusted God every step of the way. She retired in 2019 to spend time with her grandkids. Ruth always made church a priority in her family. They were active in Bible studies, small group ministries, youth programs, and service events. Even when her cancer metastasized to her bones, Ruth kept her positive attitude and relied on her faith in Jesus Christ and her hope of heaven.
Ruth and Neil were married for 37 wonderful years and were blessed with 4 grandchildren: Jane Katelyn, Paul Mark, James Thomas, and Iris Ruth.
Ruth was welcomed into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 2, 2025. Psalm 46 was her source of strength and comfort. The Funeral will be at 10:30 on Tuesday, 8 April 2025 at Messiah Lutheran Church (1800 South 84th Street Lincoln, NE) and the Committal will be same day at 3:00 at Immanuel Lutheran Church (570 3rd Road Bremen, KS). In lieu of flowers, memorials send to Messiah Lutheran Church and School.

You fought the good fight, you finished the race. With a Kansas smile and determined grace. Your thoughtful pause and raucous laugh. Warmed many young hearts on difficult paths. Our world was blessed with your love so fervent. Well done, good and faithful servant. Peace.

I always told Aunt Ruth that she “rained sunshine” everywhere she went. The world was a brighter place because of her joyful spirit she modeled for all of us. My favorite memories were listening to her Godly wisdom from all our conversations. Aunt Ruth always knew how to be encouraging & invested in bettering my life through her many years of counseling wisdom. I am a more faith filled person because of her impact on my life. I learned countless lessons from Ruth, and I always walked away feeling deeply loved! She was a rare gem & I will miss her.
