Obituary

Randall Wolf

March 5, 1955 - November 22, 2023

Randall “Randy” Lee Wolf, 68, of Lincoln passed away surrounded by family on November 22, 2023. He was born on March 5, 1955, in Fremont, NE to Berkely and Marian (Stuenkel) Wolf.

Randy was baptized March 27, 1955, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Hooper, NE. He was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington, NE. He was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Randy was steadfast in his faith.

Randy was a horticulturalist and a Nebraska Certified Nurseryman. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He started his career at Marshall Nurseries of Arlington. During high school, he worked at Earl May Garden Center in Fremont, NE, and continued on to manage branch locations in Harlan, IA, North Platte and Lincoln, NE.  Randy then became the Curator of Horticulture at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. Next, Randy worked as Greenhouse Production Manager for Seeds of Life Nursery in Elmwood, NE. Randy ended his career working for Campbell’s Nursery and Garden Center. He was regarded by his peers as an awesome ambassador for the horticulture industry.

As a child, Randy was active in his local 4-H group. He later took pride in volunteering as a judge of 4-H entries in area county fairs.

He enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing, and maintaining the family pond and property in Tekamah, NE. Randy loved a good bird dog, including his most recent German Shorthair, Tillie. He enjoyed bringing Tillie to work with him each day and taking her hunting.

Randy was blissfully married to the love of his life, Shelly, for forty years plus. God blessed their marriage with three sons.

Randy took immense pride in raising their sons. He volunteered with their Boy Scout Troop, took them hunting and fishing, and instilled in them a passion for the outdoors. In recent years, Randy enjoyed being a grandfather to four grandsons. He greatly treasured the time that he was able to spend with them.

Family members include his wife, Michelle “Shelly” Wolf; sons Phillip (Allison), Nicholas (Kayleigh), and Benjamin (Maggie) Wolf; grandchildren Ira and Ezra, Kason and Kaiser; sisters Jane (Jim) Keathley, Peggy (Randy) Anderson, and Karen (Mark) Benson; and brother Bill (Lori) Wolf. Preceded in death by his parents.

I worked for Randy at Earl May when I was in high school, my first real job. Randy was always positive and professional. I remember him being a good guy to work for, he always corrected issues as if he was a coach or teacher, he used the opportunity to better a person rather than bring them down for something done in error or incorrectly. I enjoyed working at Randy’s store for 3 years, my memory of that job was a good one and I know it was because Randy set the culture at that store. I’m very sorry to hear of Randy’s passing, feel good that his positive reach was far and wide!

I knew Randy when he worked at Campbells and I was one of his plant vendors. We always had fun conversations about the new plants he was growing and I could see that he was a true nature lover. I’m so sorry to Randy’s family and I’m sending my love and deepest sympathy.

Randy helped find us the perfect tress and bushes for our acreage over the years. He was a kind genuine man I liked him. His wife Shelly was my best friend in high school. Over the years we didn’t see each other much in our lives. They both attended my 60th birthday party and it was great to spend some time catching up and reliving some old memories. I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting their sons or grands. I hope to though. My heart goes out to Shelly and the family my deepest sympathies to you all. God has taken him home and will hold him close. Comforting prayers during this time. God gained a good man to help in his heavenly garden.

I first met Randy while working at Earl May when I was in high school. He taught me the value of hard work, great customer service and a love of Horticulture. I remember watching how He and Shelley lived. They had such a sweet close-knit family and how important faith was to them. Randy is a huge part of how I found my own faith and how important Christian Education is to me. Later in life I was able to watch Randy work with my own Son in Boy Scouts. He showed the same kindness and patience to the boys. I am grateful to Randy for the influence he had on my life and am heartbroken for his family. He was one of the best, he should have been able to stay around so much longer.

Randy was an amazing Horticulturalist… his knowledge of Nature & Plant Material has graced so many peoples lives in Nebraska it is hard to image how much postive influence he had on the Horticulture Business and People”s lives as he helped them with their plantings & their Landscapes… a true Plantsman… he also had a great sense of humor and I have some of my funniest memories in life working with him at Earl May’s in Lincoln… he is one the greatest people I have ever known… he will be missed while he tends to the Big Garden in Heaven… God Bless & Keep Him.

I have great memories of Randy growing up just a couple miles apart & even getting into trouble together with our St. Paul’s principal, Mr. Bluma. In the end it all shaped us & made us better. We were classmates from K-12 at Arlington. Sorry to hear of his passing. He was a great guy and the best part is we know he is now with the Lord. I’ll see you there later, my friend.
