Pete Spotted Horse, also known as Pedro Navejar, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2024, at the age of 85, surrounded by friends and family. Born on November 11, 1938, in Alice, Texas, Pete led a life marked by service, music, and a deep commitment to his loved ones and community.
Pete honorably served in the United States Air Force for 23 years, including time in Vietnam, earning an honorable discharge. Pete received numerous awards and decorations throughout his career. Pete was also a lifetime member of the American Legion.
A lifelong musician, Pete had an extraordinary gift, memorizing over 700 songs and performing without the need for cheat sheets. He shared the stage with music legends like Jerry Naylor, Johnny Cash, among others, while in the service. Pete and his band mate, Mike McCracken, performed together for almost eight years, averaging 10 shows a month across Nebraska, Kansas, and Nashville, Tennessee, bringing joy to audiences in nursing homes, treatment centers, and beyond. He passed while listening to one of his favorite songs to perform, “Proud Mary” by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
In addition to his musical contributions, Pete was a respected Lakota Spiritual Advisor and leader. He was a pillar of the Native community in Lincoln, providing various ceremonies, final rites, and spiritual guidance. He also volunteered and conducted ceremonies at state prisons, offering comfort and support to those in need. His dedication to his heritage and community left a lasting impact on countless lives.
Pete is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn Kraus, and her children, Susanne and Joseph. He is also survived by his son, Donald and his wife Patty; two grandchildren, Marcus and “Nikki” Nichole; and four great-grandchildren, Devin, Cam, Oliver, and Berkeley. Pete’s legacy of service, spirituality, and music will be cherished by all who knew him.
A funeral service will take place at the Indian Center on Saturday, September 21st, at 2 PM. The family welcomes you to join them before the Funeral Service to share memories, pay your respects and have lunch from 12:00 pm- 2:00 pm at the Indian Center.
On Monday, September 23rd, Pete will be transported to the Omaha National Cemetery for a 1:30 PM service with military honors. Flowers can be sent to Medcalf Funeral Home at 245 N 27th St, Lincoln, NE 68503 prior to his services.
