Those of us who knew Owen well knew he was soft-hearted and loving underneath a stoic exterior.

Owen’s love and devotion to his wife and his family were evident. When his kids were young and he was away with the Guard for training, he wrote letters to Carol and to his kids who were pretty young at the time. The love shown in those letters is heartening to his kids now that they are grown. He was also especially fond of his cat, Luther, who was rescued at the church one fall day and taken in by he and Carol.

Owen enjoyed having family around him, especially around the holidays, which usually included playing cards or board games, or Wii Bowling. He also enjoyed playing dominoes with friends after he and Carol moved into assisted living. He was a pretty good bowler in real life, too, having bowled in many leagues from his very young adulthood. He and Carol would often start their day together by working the word puzzles in the morning newspaper.

Owen loved his Husker teams, especially football and volleyball. As a Guardsman he worked the football games and would take one of his kids along to watch the game.

Owen loved to tease his grandkids and great grandkids. Nothing brought a smile to his face quite like the little ones did.

Owen was industrious and creative and loved DIY projects and woodworking. If something needed fixing, duct tape was always in good supply! He also built bird houses and bird feeders and then Carol would add the finishing touches with colorful paint.

Owen was a rock to his family and will be sorely missed, but we are so happy to know that he and Carol are back together.

Thinking of you all in the loss of your dad. I have so many good memories growing up in the same neighborhood and church family.

Owen was the best office manager that I ever had. He was a little gruff but he deeply cared for United Lutheran and the people who attended there. I think of various times working with Owen, too many fun times, and many crunch times as well. I do remember one time he was preparing a funeral bulletin and a couple things were off and the family decided to move the funeral to another date. So Owen changed the things needed to be changed as well as the date for the funeral. The original funeral date was February 28th and they wanted it two days later so Owen dutifully put February 30th for the date (it was two days later). When we proof read the bulletin we both got a laugh out of his mistake. I know he was proud of his family and told me different times that he was happy that all his kids attended church. That was important to him as well as family gatherings while dining out.

David sang “ What a friend we have in Jesus” on the Sunday before Owen’s passing. What a magnificent job! Owen’s family were raised to know Jesus. United was touched by his family’s talent for years. Thank you to all. Lifting you all up in prayer as you grieve and move forward.
