Obituary

Nancy C. Van Horn

February 25, 1946 - November 13, 2024

Nancy Carol Johnson Van Horn, beloved mother to two daughters, Kristine Amack of Cazenovia, NY and Sarah Helvey of Omaha, NE, passed away on November 13, 2024.

She was born in Kearney, NE in 1946 to Sidney and Jane Johnson, and raised on a farm along the South Platte River. Nancy attended Kearney High School, graduating in 1964. She married her high school sweetheart, Jim Van Horn, in 1967 and together they raised their family in Lincoln until his untimely passing in 1998.

Nancy was a devoted grandmother to four granddaughters, Amelia and Ruby Amack, and Marigold and Marley Helvey, her pride and joy. She loved attending their sporting events and musical performances.

Many people will agree that Nancy had a gift for caretaking for others in times of need. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends, attending Husker sporting events, participating in dance class, and spending time with many long-time neighbors and friends. Nancy had a special connection with her sons-in-law, Jeff Amack and Jay Helvey.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband and parents, and is survived by her brother Herb Johnson and wife Linda of Kearney, NE, and her sister Judy Hall of Lonetree, CO; and her companion of 23 years, Dan Windhorst of Scottsbluff, NE.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, November 25th, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Lincoln in the Chapel. Livestream at roperandsons.com.

November 23, 2024

Nancy had been a long time participant of my Dance for Parkinson’s program since 2015. She was loved and admired by all. The class was a big part of her life and her community. Nancy will truly be missed leaving a void that the entire dance group will feel strongly. We will honor Nancy’s memory doing a dance for her and with her when we get together next. With fondest memories of Nancy, a truly kind, special, and giving of spirit woman. Dance on dance ever Nancy!

Nancy was a long time college friend and high school friend of Bob’s. She and Jim welcomed us to Lincoln in 1972. Old friends are like gold and they will be missed. My prayers and condolences to the family.

Kind, thoughtful, genuine, are just a few adjectives that describe Nancy. She was always there to lend a hand and her eyes sparkled. Her giggles were soul soothing. Her legacy lives on. May God give you the strength you need and may your hearts be full of LOVE and happy memories.
