Nancy Ann Sorensen

June 9, 1933 - January 31, 2024

Nancy Ann (Wilbanks) Sorensen passed away on January 31, 2024, in Lincoln Nebraska. She was born on June 9th, 1933, in El Paso Texas to the late Douglas (“Parkes”) and Helen Wilbanks.

Nancy received a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Texas–El Paso (then Texas Western College) majoring in Mathematics and minoring in secondary education and Radio-Television. She belonged to Delta Gamma Sorority, holding offices, and becoming a Sun Carnival Duchess in ’56-’57. Other activities included journalism and choir. Nancy continued her education by receiving a Master of Education degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Texas – Austin. She met her husband to be, Bob, while both were singing in the choir at the First United Methodist Church in El Paso. Bob was stationed at Fort Bliss Army Base. After their marriage, they moved to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa where she pursued a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics while Bob pursued his doctoral degree in Agronomy. Their first son, David, was born in Ames. Their second son, Bill, was born in Lincoln, Nebraska where Bob began his postdoc at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

With a family to raise, Nancy began to focus on Christian education in the Methodist church, which led to a position as the Director of Christian Education at St Paul United Methodist Church in Lincoln. She was also a freelance writer and workshop leader in Christian education. Nancy closed out her professional career by transitioning back to mathematics and education by becoming a curriculum editor in the Independent Study Department, Division of Continuing Studies at the University of Nebraska. There she created and updated independent study courses in mathematics.

As the responsibilities of raising two boys and her professional activities eased, Nancy took more interest in travel and photography. She traveled extensively throughout the United States and the British Isles. She planned many family vacations with her sons and their families. In retirement, Nancy and Bob continued their travels, generating a large archive of photos and journals from every trip and adventure.

She is survived by her immediate family; son Dave, his wife Tracy, and their children: granddaughter Anne, husband Darko Kapetanovich and their son Kai, granddaughter Alex and grandson Erik; her son Bill, his wife Karen, her daughter Kari and grandsons and granddaughter; sister-in-law Connie; nieces Susie and Barb; nephew Steve. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Bob in 2019.

Funeral service: 1:00 pm Thursday, February 8, 2024, New Hope United Methodist Church, 1205 N. 45th Street. Interment in Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation with family present from 5-7 pm Wednesday, February 7, 2024, Roper and Sons Midtown Chapel, 4300 ‘O’ Street.
