Obituary

Matthew Lee Martin

February 13, 1986 - July 22, 2024

Matthew Lee Martin, 38, of Lincoln, NE left this world and was wrapped up in the arms of Jesus on July 22, 2024.

Matt was born in Virginia Beach, VA to Bradley Martin and Debi Beem. As a military family, they had the opportunity to travel and live in exciting locations including the island territory of Guam- one of Matt’s most memorable times! In 1996, Matt’s family returned home to Northwestern Iowa where Matt graduated from Westwood Highschool in 2004.

Anyone who knew Matt quickly learned that he was very intelligent and had an exceptional gift for Information Technology. He graduated from Kaplan University in Lincoln, NE and shared his talents through employment at Williams Group, The University of Nebraska, and Union Bank & Trust over the past 18 years. To watch Matt troubleshoot any IT related issue was to truly see him thriving in his element!

In 2005, Matt met Candice (Hottovy) and they began their love story together in Lincoln, NE! Matt took Candice on many fun adventures- beaches, winery trips, hikes in Colorado and tasting as many delicious cuisines as possible throughout their journeys! On fall Saturdays, they were dedicated to cheering on their favorite football teams. In 2017, Matt proposed to Candice on a special turtle beach in Florida, they married the following year and quickly added three beautiful sons Derek, Gavin & Landon to complete their little family.

Matt was a wonderful father, and his boys brought a special joy to his life! He taught Derek to cast a line and fish this summer and how to build some epic lego towers. Matt and Gavin spent many special times cuddling and watching children’s shows while enjoying their favorite snacks. Landon had Matt wrapped around his finger early on- he is truly a mini version of his daddy!

Matt is survived by his wife, three sons, parents Bradley (Barbara) Martin, Kansas City and Debi Beem, Papillion; grandmother Merriel Miller, Iowa; sisters Leah (Sarah) Martin, Omaha; Sarah (Nicholas) Carver, Alaska; Jewel Edenfield Papillion; Ana (Shane) Klockman, Kansas City; Emily Dascalos, Oregon; brother Jacob Martin, his loving parents-in-law, brother and sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents Roger and Georgia Martin, James Beem, Donald Soukup.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 26th from 5 – 7 p.m. at St Joseph’s Catholic Church. Rosary to follow at 7 p.m.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 27th at 10 a.m., also at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Matt and I were best friends throughout high-school, and even though we fell out of contact over the years, his passing was a saddening shock that I still have trouble accepting. I will always remember the sound of his laughter and the smile on Matt’s face that let you know he was living life to the fullest. The last time I spoke with Matt, he explained that he was fulfilling his career goals and that life was good. It saddens me to know that I never reached out to congratulate him on becoming a father, or to share stories of being a Dad. The void created by his passing is one whose magnitude seems unfathomable to me; I pray that Candice and their three sons can, in time, find a sense of peace in dealing with this great loss. I also pray that Matt has found his way back to the infinite and eternal Bliss that is God’s Love.

I might not have known Matt as long as many others or as well. Matt, Candice, and Derek came to a couple of my pool parties. It didn’t take long to see what a kind and caring man he was. A devoted husband and father was beyond obvious. He loved his family deeply. One year they had a fun Christmas party, games, good food, etc. Matt was so easy to talk to and made me feel very comfortable and at ease. He will be missed by many. Keeping Candice and the boys in my thoughts and prayers.
