Obituary

Matthew Allen Joy

August 14, 1954 - November 7, 2024

Matthew Allen Joy was born in 1954 and died suddenly at the age of 70 on November 7, 2024 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

He was born to parents Wanda and George Joy and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was the youngest of three brothers. He graduated from Southeast High in 1972 and went on to graduate from Hastings College with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. After college Matt spent a year hitchhiking across the western United States, which helped define his worldview and spirit to explore. In addition to traveling, he also loved bicycling, music and going to concerts, and working on Volkswagens. In the Volkswagen club, he was known as “The Matt Joy”. He had a long career as a CPA in Lincoln and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
In 1997, he met his partner in life and love, Kim Joy. Matt and Kim were married in 2000. After spending many years in Lincoln, they moved to Santa Fe, a place to which Matt felt a strong connection. In addition to continuing his work as a CPA, Matt found joy in life in many ways. He loved traveling to national parks, spending time with friends and family, biking the trails and roads of New Mexico, listening to his favorite bands, and investing time with his DIY and woodworking projects.
Matt is survived by his wife; Kim, step-daughters; Brooklynne and Brittany Rosado, brother; George (Jan) Joy, niece and nephew; Elizabeth (Amaha) Tsegaye and George (Sara) Joy, sister-in-law; Susan (Gregory) Joy, multiple beloved nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father; George, mother; Wanda, and brother; Gregory.
Matt, we will miss your steady hand, consistency, kindheartedness, generosity, and your ability to fix anything. We will miss your long-detailed stories, your Mattisms, your world-famous margaritas and seeing you wear shorts and Birkenstocks even when it’s freezing out. Thank you for touching our lives and for everything we have gotten to share with you. With sincere gratitude for the time and experiences we’ve had, and with great sorrow and sadness to lose you, until we see you again, we will just leave you with this…

We love you and we’ll be here, “Hangin’ out lookin’ cool.”

The family history of the Joys and the Basocos goes all the way back to Winthrop Road a large window at the Joys’ house being broken by a well hit baseball. That was the end of baseball in the Basoco’s back yard. All three boys shoveled snow for Mr. and Mrs. Basoco. I believe Matt was my mother’s favorite because he paid attention to the small details. Matt re-connected with the Basocos in the 1990’s, There was a memorable FAST ride in the’57 down 70th Street. In October 1997 we cooked a meal or two on my charcoal-fired Weber Kettle waiting for power to be restored. Matt did Robert’s taxes for several years and the only payment he would accept was Breakfast at the Green Gateau. Robert learned to on drink only one of Matt’s Margarita the hard way. For the Basoco family–Miguel and Doris, Ellen (Missy), Robert and Jane Eichelberger Basoco, and Chris Basoco–as a friend and neighbor Matt Joy is UNFORGETTABLE

I remember caring for Matt in clinic with Siri Khalsa. Even in a crisis, he had a smile and reflected a love for Kim when he would see her. You could see the love in his eyes and Kim returned that amor. What a beautiful blessing to have known Matt. Kim, I imagine this is very difficult but, you will come through like a shining star that you are. Love and hugs –

Going all the way back to our Kindergarten days at Westminster, he was my oldest friend and could always made me laugh. He even found a way to make sense of my crazy music and itemized tax receipts. He was like a brother who never judged, just found a way to make it all better…. “We’ll meet again on some bright highway, songs to sing and tales to tell, But I’m just a pilgrim on this road boys, until I see you fare thee well” Steve Earle

Several notable adventures with Matt. Among them was extricating a vintage table saw from a shop in the north bottoms so he could make his one of a kind Frankenstein double table saw!

We met Matt in 1987 after we had moved back to Lincoln and I had just purchased a ’57 VW. The seller gave me Matt’s VW Restoration business card. We stopped at Matt’s house on Otto St so that I could introduce myself. Matt was in the garage. I left Vickie and the kids in the car for “just a couple of minutes”. A couple of hours later I made it back to the car and apologized. It didn’t take long and Matt and I were best friends (Matt had many). We love you Matt and will miss you dearly.

I met Matt through my good friend, Kim. I was struck by his humility, sincerity, humor and sense of adventure! Matt, I will miss you. You are the Champion of the Good Guys! I love you, my friend.
