Matthew A. Taber, 81, formerly of Lincoln, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017 in Malvern, Arkansas. Matt was born November 3, 1936 in Lincoln, Nebraska to the late Edward Timothy and Bridget Emma Louise Fogarty ‘Coutzie’ Taber.
Highlights of Matt’s golf career on the local, state, and national scene included multiple wins of the Lincoln City amateur, winning the Nebraska State Amateur title, and five time winner of the prestigious “Grand Island Tournament of Champions”. He won the “Heart of America” 4-ball with partner, Jim Colbert, and was runner-up in the “Trans Mississippi Amateur”. In an earlier “Trans Mississippi”, he lost in the quarter finals to a young Jack Nicklaus. Matt was a successful golf course builder in both the USA and Asia.
Matt was preceded in death by twin brother Timothy Edward Taber, daughters Diana Taber and Terry Stover, and former wife Carol Martin. Matt is survived by brother Edward Tierney Taber (Gail) of Aurora, OH., son Donnie Taber (Kim) of Malvern, AR., daughter Gina Davis (Rick) of Mechanicsville, VA., daughter Rhonda Daggett (Chuck) of Hurst, TX., former wife Betty Ward Taber of Malvern, AR., four grandsons Matthew J. and Tyler Taber of Malvern, AR., Jamie Stover (Kristy) of Abilene, KS., Logan Von Seggern of Lincoln, NE., four granddaughters, Heather Weber (Steve) of Hoisington, KS., and Lindsey Farmer (Jason) of Halstead, KS., Carson Swesey (Phillip) of Hot Springs, AR., and Leah Von Seggern of Omaha, NE., plus, numerous nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, and countless friends.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
