Obituary

Mary Jean (Kelly) Shipman

-

Mary Jean (Kelly) Shipman passed away on October 25, 2022, just before her 82nd birthday. While a lengthy illness eventually sapped much of her strength, it couldn’t touch her outgoing, loving spirit, wit and warmth that sustained her, and those around her, throughout.

Mary devoted 30+ years as a research baker in the wheat quality lab at UNL, milling wheat samples and baking thousands of loaves of bread, all with scientific precision. In her free time she loved the outdoors, and was an avid gardener and a dedicated beekeeper producing “Grandma Mary’s Honey,” much to family and friends’ annual delight. She was a talented photographer, with a knack for appreciating the beauty in the world around her. Mary was a proud, lifelong Lincolnite and Husker fan.

Mary’s family meant the world to her, and she to them. She is survived by her son, Scott, his wife (Suzy) and sons (Joe and Sam); her two sisters (Kathleen Smith and JoAnn Major); eight nieces and nephews and their families; and many dear friends.

A Mass Celebrating Mary’s life will be held at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 735 S 36th St, Lincoln on Monday, October 31, 2022, at 10:00 a.m., with a reception following in the church hall.

Memorials can be directed to Sunken Gardens (https://www.lincolnparks.org/donation-pages/sunken-gardens/sunken-gardens.html), or to Great Plains Master Beekeeping program (https://gpmb.unl.edu/).

October 28, 2022

I am so very sad to learn this news. Indeed Mary had a wonderful spirit that was enjoyed by many! Mary worked very closely with my Father, Uwe Frankle at TMCO/National Mfg.. I remember many occasions my Dad would share stories that would bring a smile to his face and our families, because of Mary. Though we all knew, Mary was very serious & focused in her precise requirements for the mixing bowls and equipment he machined & repaired for her at TMCO. Every year, for many years, at the TMCO Open House, Oktoberfest, EVERYONE who “knew” would go to the area, we knew, Mary would be making warm bread as a special treat. You didn’t want to miss that “stop” at the annual event. Everyone who visited received good cup of coffee & her freshly baked warm bread….it is a memory I will always cherish. My Father, Uwe, died unexpectedly in 2009, and for several years after his death, I attended the annual TMCO Open House, always looking for Mary and the bread. May her spirit rest in peace, it was a very REAL Pleasure to know her. She will be missed deeply by so many.
