Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Booker) Nielsen

May 25, 1934 - January 3, 2025

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Booker) Nielsen, May 25, 1934 – January 3, 2025. Betty spent her life serving others – first in her dad’s hardware store, then as a speech therapist, and especially as a wonderful mom, caregiver, grandma, and community and church volunteer.

Betty graduated from Neche High School (ND), the University of North Dakota, and Northwestern University. In 1959, she married Paul Nielsen and together they had three children. They lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Huron, South Dakota before moving to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1977.

Survivors include son John (Sharon) Nielsen; daughters Jeanne Nielsen and Barb (Nolan) Schmit; grandchildren Beth Nielsen, Paul Nielsen, Madeline Schmit (Ellen Schnacker), Katherine Schmit, and Peter Schmit; and sister-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Preceded in death by husband Paul, parents John and Pauline Booker, and brother Bob Booker.

Much gratitude to the caring and professional staff at Legacy Estates and to her many loving friends.

Memorial service Wednesday, January 8 at 1pm; gathering with family present Tuesday, January 7 from 4pm-6pm – both at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 8320 South Street, Lincoln, NE.
