Following a May 1950 graduation from Lincoln High School, Martha married Weldon Nelson on December 23, 1951. She was a former member of First Church of God and Fellowship Community Church, and most recently attended Second Baptist Church. Martha graciously gave of her time and energy to each of these churches throughout her membership.
Upon graduation, she worked at Elgin Watch and the Candy Counter at Penny’s in downtown Lincoln. She prioritized her family by choosing jobs that allowed her to be home when her children returned from school. She loved working as a food server at Gramercy Hill and Bethany Elementary school. When Cindy and Dave attended Nebraska Wesleyan University, Martha took on a custodial position in the Smith-Curtis building to pay for their tuition. Again, giving of herself to make life easier for her adored children. She also ran an in-home daycare, and as one might imagine, she loved “her kids” very much.
Martha was preceded to heaven by her parents – Walter and Gladys Gloe, brother – Ace Gloe, sister – Mary Brozek, infant son – Mark, and an infant grandson – Ryan Daniel Nelson. She is survived by her husband – Weldon, sister – Priscilla Wing of Colorado, daughters – Cindy (Dave) Jorgensen, Cathy (Marvin) Warm, sons – Dennis (Barb) Nelson, and David Nelson – all of Lincoln. Other survivors include granddaughters – Kristin McNerny of Lincoln, Dr. Corita (Ryan) Wheeler of Kearney, Elyse Steinkruger of Lincoln, and Megan (Dr. Lincoln) Pearson of Lincoln, grandson – William (Miranda) Steinkruger of Franklin, Nebraska. She was very proud of her six great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and furry companion — Bo.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, January 15, 2024 at 10:30 a.m.
