Mark Phillip Sorensen

January 17, 1959 - December 27, 2024

January 17, 1959 – December 27, 2024

Mark Phillip Sorensen passed away peacefully on December 27, 2024, at Bryan East Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska, surrounded by his devoted wife and loving family. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Jean Sorensen. He is survived by his beloved wife, Vicky (Knaub) Sorensen; his brothers, Tom (Sandy) Sorensen and John (Anne) Sorensen; his sister, Julie Splichal; and a large extended family, including cherished brothers- and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews who loved him deeply.

Mark was a kind, generous, and loving soul who left a profound impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His life was defined by his adventurous spirit, his commitment to service, and the joy he shared with family and friends.

Mark had a passion for sailing that brought him endless joy and inspired those around him. He treasured time spent at Branched Oak Lake, where he and Vicky made countless memories hanging out at their camper at the Optimist’s Lodge and sailing their beloved boat, S’Lucian Dream, out of Branched Oak Marina. Mark’s love of the open water extended far beyond Nebraska; he captained chartered sailboats in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, sharing unforgettable adventures with loved ones. His fondness for the islands was matched by his appreciation for their culture—whether enjoying a Painkiller cocktail at the Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke or savoring a lobster dinner on the beaches of Anegada, Mark’s stories of these idyllic retreats brought the islands to life for those who knew him.

Mark’s dedication to others was exemplified through his involvement with the Lincoln West Optimist Club, where he was a pillar of the community. He served on the board and numerous committees, helping to maintain and enhance the Optimist Lodge and campgrounds at Branched Oak Lake. Mark recruited new members and championed their engagement in the club’s activities. Through his connections at his decades-long career at Molex Incorporated, he was instrumental in fundraising efforts that benefited the club and its mission.

One of Mark’s most cherished contributions was his work with Homer’s Heroes, a division of the Lincoln Youth Baseball Organization for children with physical or intellectual disabilities. As a volunteer “Buddy,” he offered unwavering encouragement and support, helping young athletes find joy and confidence on the field.

Mark’s adventurous and compassionate nature touched countless lives. He leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and cherished memories. In his own words, “I lived life better than most.”

A Celebration of Life to honor Mark will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm at Big 10 Sports Bar & Grill, 130 N. 10th Street, Lincoln Nebraska 68508. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Lincoln West Optimist Club, PO Box 231, Malcolm, NE 68402, or via the “Send a Memorial Gift in Honor of Mark” option on their website at lincolnwestoptimists.com.

I worked with Mark for a short time years ago at Square D company and then for several years again at Molex. He had a passion for life, and I enjoyed hearing about his adventures sailing down in the Caribbean. I was going through some hard times for a while and Mark was always there to support me, he had a good heart and even stopped by my home one time to offer support annd encouragement I will always remember that.

Mark, along with Vicky helped me live my best life. I went from “stink boater” to a “Rag Bagger”. Appreciating the wind instead of the vroom-vroom noise! Mark was always excited to teach about sailing and his favorite place in the BVI’s. I was so very fortunate to know such a generous and kind man. ❤️

Mark was the one that trained me at molex and said I was a good milker. He got caught trying to hide a carton of open milk in my bottom drawer of my toolbox! He was also the one that invited me into the Lincoln West Optimist Club and was my sponser. Thanks for being you Mark!
