Marilyn Porter went home to be with the Lord on October 1, 2022. Born at home in rural Cuming County on October 10, 1928, she was the second child of William and Christina Naber. Lois (Naber) Porter was her older sister. She attended country school in rural Cuming County and graduated from Scriber High School in 1945. All during this time she faithfully attended St. John’s Church on the Cuming County line.
For I know that my Redeemer lives.
Job 19:25
On December 7, 1947, she married Harland Porter. They moved onto a farm place in rural Dodge County where they were engaged in raising cattle and farming and faithfully attended St. John’s Ridgely Lutheran church. She devoted her life to raising her children, cooking, gardening, sewing and assisting with the farm, as well as teaching Sunday school, vacation Bible school, hosting neighborhood Bible studies and faithfully serving and participating in the Ladies Aide group, and local Extension club. After her children were grown, she worked at a day care, and volunteered at the Good Samaritan Center, doing hair for others. She also attended Bible Study Fellowship in Fremont for several years. In September 2016, she suffered a stroke. From that time until her death she resided at the Tabitha Nursing Center.
With her husband they raised five children, who all survive her, Jim (Rita) Porter, John (Joanne) Porter, Rod Porter, Ron Porter, and Gail (Steve) DeRiese, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Her husband died in 2008. Inscribed on their joint tombstone is the Scripture that mattered most to her “For I know that my Redeemer lives.” Job 19:25, an eternal truth, an enduring testimony and witness until the Return of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I’ll always remember the time I spent with Grandma Porter, perhaps most of all the time we spent together playing cards while eating one or two of her delicious homemade chocolate chips cookies after dinner – sweet, quiet, tranquil times. We spent many times like that after dinner: Playing cards while chatting about something or as she related an anecdote. She was always so sweet, so generous, and so kind. I love you, Grandma, and I always will.
– Ryan Porter
What a lovely lady. So sweet and always something good to say about everything and everyone. She will be missed by her Ridgeley family. Prayers to all.
