Obituary

Margaret Skoog

April 8, 1927 - December 24, 2024

Margaret Skoog, 97, of West Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024 at Grand Living Tower Place, her senior retirement home. A graveside service and burial will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 1:00pm at Fridhem Cemetery in Swedeburg, Nebraska.

Margaret was born in Wahoo, Nebraska on April 8, 1927 to Joseph and Ruth Nelson. She graduated from Ceresco High School in 1944, attended Luther College (Wahoo, NE), and was a member of the last class of the Cadet Nurse Corps. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Corps in conjunction with Lincoln General Hospital in December 1948. She made a career in nursing for 50 years, working short stints in Denver and Seattle, and spending the majority of her years in Omaha with Omaha Public Schools (Benson, Belle Ryan, Beals) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (Pediatrics 6NS). She married Ulf Skoog in 1957 and had one son, John.

In addition to serving others through nursing, Margaret was also a wonderful hostess and cook. She embraced her Swedish heritage and created memorable, authentic meals and exquisite baked goods that she shared with many. Margaret had a beautiful way of presenting herself and her home. Margaret also enjoyed musical offerings, from church to the symphony to her grandchildren’s performances. She stayed connected to her nursing friends, kept in touch with family near and far, and cherished many new friendships she forged in her retirement community. She stayed fiercely independent all of her life.

Margaret was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be missed by her family, son John (Joan), and grandchildren Carl (Rachel), Erik, and Ingrid along with many other extended family members and dear friends.

Memorial contributions can be directed to Evangelical Covenant Church (Ceresco, NE) or to Swedeburg Covenant Church to benefit Fridhem Cemetery (Swedeburg, NE).

Margaret went to nurse’s training with my mom ( Marilyn ) and another friend Helen, and they were lifelong friends. Both she and Ulf had a twinkle in their eye. I remember going over to their home, and there Margaret coached me in making her fabulous homemade angel food cake. She made the best angel food cake this side of heaven. I still have her recipe. God bless you, John, and your family, as you grieve and celebrate her life. May the Lord Himself comfort you all. Helen Petto

I remember visiting with Margaret and Ulf several times when they would stop by the Willow Point Gallery/Museum in Ashland. Ulf did a lot of work on our home and it was always a pleasure to visit with Margaret. A very lovely lady.

I’m so thankful I had the pleasure of meeting this sweet angel🤍 I’m so sad she’s gone but i’m happy she’s happy and at peace. I loved serving her at Grand Living, I was always looking forwards to seeing her at dinner and her contagious laughter! She brought so much happiness to me and i’ll forever be grateful. I’ll miss you my friend but I know you’re in a good place! My condolences go out to her family, I’ll keep you in my prayers
