Lyndon D. Hinton, age 59 of Lincoln, passed away November 22, 2019, from complications of Type 1 diabetes. Lyndon was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on August 11, 1960, to Elizabeth Hinton and the late Carl Hinton. He moved several times as a young child and then settled in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida in his school years. He graduated from Choctawhatchee High School in 1978.
Lyndon attended several colleges, including University of West Florida and the University of South Florida, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He began working full-time in the computer industry as a mainframe operator, PC technician, and programmer. He met his future wife, Michelle Carrier, in Tampa, Florida in 1985 when he interviewed her for a job at his company. They married in July 1989. The couple moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1990 and he finished his Bachelor’s degree in business at Doane College in 1991. The couple was blessed with 30 years of marriage and two daughters, Melissa and Lauren.
He worked at the Nebraska Department of Revenue as a Network Systems Manager and earned his certified Network Engineer designation from Novell. He was a co-founder and past president of the local Novell Area Users Group. He started his own computer consulting business in 1997 and operated it until 2002. He continued to work as a network engineer for the next few years.
In 2005 he switched careers and attended culinary school at SCC-Lincoln and graduated in 2006 with an A.A. degree in Food Service and Hospitality. He worked at UNL Dining Services and then became the Executive Chef at Concordia University in Seward, NE. He was a member of the American Culinary Federation and passed a rigorous exam to become a Certified Sous Chef. The long hours and physical demands of food service took their toll and he returned to technical computer work at NTT Data Services and recently World Wide Tech, Inc.
Lyndon was an avid bicyclist during his life. He rode in many 50 to 100 mile rides in Nebraska and he completed week-long tours across the states of Georgia (BRAG), North Carolina (Cycle NC), Colorado (Ride the Rockies), Utah, and Nebraska. He rode in multiple BRAN and Tour De Nebraska tours. He is a past president and member of the Great Plains Bicycling Club. He also enjoyed racquetball and snow skiing, and he was a past member of the Cornhusker Ski Club. He liked to travel and take trips in the camper with his family. He even became a serious Cornhusker fan in his adopted home state.
He is survived by his wife Michelle (Carrier), daughters Melissa and Lauren , mother Elizabeth Hinton of Greenville, SC, sister Deborah Whatley (Charles) of Greer, SC, and their children Matthew and Ariel Whatley, sister-in-law Donna Smith (Rio Rancho, NM) and her children Rachel Smith and Kara St. John. Extended family includes Pam Carrier and son Daniel, Randy Winter (Vicky), Randy’s son Jeremy Winter and daughter Deana Winter (Tug Newett) and her daughter Cienna, and his beloved Chocolate Lab Kodi. He was predeceased by his father Carl Hinton, sister-in-law Pam Winter, and and brother-in-law Jim Carrier.
Memorial gathering with family greeting friends will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at Roper & Sons South Lincoln Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Dr., Lincoln, NE. Memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring.
