Lyndee J. Black
September 2, 1952 – September 11, 2024
Lyndee was born in Crete, Nebraska to Edward and Alma (Znamenacek) Brhel. She grew up on a farm and attended a one room country school until she attended Crete High School where she graduated in 1970.

She went on to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated with honors in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an accounting emphasis.

After graduating she began working as a Certified Public Accountant at Marvin E. Jewell & Co. where she worked for 16 years. She next worked at Thomas, Watts, and Hershberger for 11 years. She then became a founding partner of Thomas, Kunc, and Black in 2001 and worked until this year. In total Lyndee spent 50 years working as a CPA. Lyndee took great pride in her work. She provided dedicated and exemplary service to her clients and was a thoughtful and helpful mentor to her colleagues.

It was important to Lyndee to be an active and involved member of the community. She served as a board member for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Nebraska from 2005 to 2019. Lyndee was a member of the Quality Enhancement Program Committee for the Nebraska State Board of Public Accountancy from 1987 to 2010. She also was a member of multiple committees for the Nebraska Society of Certified Public Accountants and in 2008 earned their Distinguished Service to the Profession Award. She served on committees for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants that involved national travel and work to develop and edit questions for the CPA exam. Lyndee also served her community by acting as treasurer for the Friends of the International Quilt Museum for 9 years, acting as treasurer for the Friends of the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery for 7 years, was a member of the United Way-Allocations Team for 7 years, and was a member of and treasurer for the Board of Directors for YWCA of Lincoln for several years.

While Lyndee was incredibly hardworking, she was perhaps even more dedicated to her family, friends, and hobbies. Lyndee had weekly dinners with her brother, weekly lunches with her best friend, and weekly dinners with friends. She was a kind, loyal, and trustworthy friend. She loved books and was a voracious reader. She was an inspired quilter. She began quilting in 1995 and it became an enduring passion through which she made many great friends. She made many beautiful quilts, attended the annual QuiltNebraska for many years, and met monthly with her quilting group. She also loved watching and discussing Husker volleyball.

Lyndee is survived by brother, Danny Brhel; lifelong friend, Deanna Suhr and the entire Suhr family including Ted, Laura, Jeremy, Maggie, Owen, and Collin; close friends, John Murphy and Jeff Rowland.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Joan.

Lyndee and I did not have a relationship outside of her being our accountant but I always found her to be personable and helpful.
