Obituary

Kilee R. (Portenier) Oetjen

November 10, 1982 - January 10, 2024

Kilee R. (Portenier) Oetjen, surrounded by her family, passed away on January 10, 2024, at Bryan West in Lincoln, Nebraska. She fought a hard battle in the past 22 months against B cell Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (B-All). Kilee’s faith and fight carried her through many long hard days of the battle. She was always there with a smile and words of encouragement to all who were in need. Kilee Rachel Portenier was born on November 10, 1982, at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, NE. She may have arrived 11 days past her due date, but she quickly made-up time. Kilee was the first of four daughters born to Keith (Kif) and Sharon (Sund) Portenier.

Kilee was raised on a farm near Harvard, NE. She was baptized at First United Methodist in Harvard, NE, as an infant. She attended Harvard Public Schools from K-12. She loved being able to say she was a Harvard Graduate Class of 2001. Following her high school graduation, she chose Chadron State College for her undergrad studies. She was then accepted into UNMC Doctor of Physical Therapy program, graduating in 2007. During PT school she met the love of her life – Henry “Hank” Oetjen. They were married on July 21, 2007, at Stockham Community Church in Stockham, NE. Kilee accepted a job at Chadron Community Hospital as a physical therapist. Kilee and Hank made their home in Hay Springs, NE, later moving to Lincoln, NE, and then to a country home in rural Walton, NE. Kilee worked at Madonna Rehabilitation hospital and was asked to help develop their Pediatric PT department.

Kilee and Hank became the parents to three beautiful daughters Ruby, Willa, and Lydia. There was nothing Kilee loved more than coaching volleyball for the girls, packing up the car and camper for a fun weekend of softball, or loading up the calves in the trailer for the county fair. After the birth of their third daughter Kilee began her work as a physical therapist for Bryan Healthcare. She was later asked to join the EPIC team to develop and implement the electronic charting system hospital wide. She enjoyed the new challenge and later moved to the building department of the EPIC department at Bryan Health. She took some forced vacations throughout her battle with leukemia. She might have been found in her hospital room or in her home office working on her computer. Kilee enjoyed several trips to Disney World with her family. She loved to do anything with cattle, especially her highlander, Ferdinand. Her two dogs were her companions when she was confined to her home during her battle. Roscoe and Fozzie loved their “Momma”.

Kilee touched so many people in so many positive ways at their church, her work, a ball game, the country fair, or over a glass of tea or Mountain Dew at a table somewhere. Kilee loved helping others. Fall was her favorite season whether it was decorating the front porch or running the harvest equipment in the field to bring in the crops. She also might have been found swinging in her Grandma Ruby’s porch swing on the porch of the home she and Hank built on the farm.

Kilee was taken too soon from many: her husband, Hank Oetjen; daughters Ruby Grace, Willa Marie, Lydia Jo; parents Kif and Sharon Portenier of Farnam, NE; sisters and their families, Abbie (Andy) Albrecht and children Atwood and Ariat of Basset, NE, Jessie (Dylan) Ruppert and children Sterling and Quincie of Curtis, NE, Allie (Andrew) Klintworth and their Baby K who won’t get to know Aunt Kilee’s love of Farnam, NE; mother-in-law Joyce Oetjen of Walton, NE; and sister-in-law and family Becky and Tony Johnson and children Jack and Max of Auburn, NE.

She is preceded in death by her father-in-law Chris Oetjen; grandparents Keith and Lois Portenier, Rachael Portenier, and George and Ruby Sund.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I did not get the opportunity to meet Kilee–she was to be a teaching assistant for a pediatric physical therapy class our company was hosting in Des Moines this coming weekend. She was the first person to ask to fill the teaching assistant role and her enthusiasm made us excited to get to have her in the course. I read her obituary and it sounds like her caring nature had a big impact on many people. Again, sorry for your loss and may your memories provide comfort.

We remember when Kilee was born, Kif and Sharon were good neighbors and friends. All of our girls grew up together and Kilee was one of the smartest gals we knew. She was so smiley and her eyes sparkled when she smiled…we send our deepest sympathy to all the family. Her courageous battle was an encouragement for others. She was so brave… so much an inspiration to many. God’s peace to all of you.

Kilee and I went to PT school together. She was so excited she had personal license plates “PT2BE so she was definitely led to this profession of helping people…loved her husband her kids and her cattle. Person that saw God in everything…be it pics hauling beans or her kids playing ball. She touched lives and will be missed. Rest in peace lady, what you did in life will echo in eternity.

Kilee was such a special lady. I worked with Kilee at Bryan. She contributed so much. She made lemonade out of lemons. When the physical work of PT was getting to be too much, we helped her find a new path with EPIC. She excelled there as well. Her worked touched thousands of lives and made a positive difference. A bright light taking way too soon. Prayers for peace for the entire family, especially those three girls! Your Mom was one special lady.

As a friend of Abbie’s, Kilee was a fun older sister to know growing up. I remember her being extremely intelligent and being impressed by her knowledge. My family and I are incredibly sorry for your loss, Hank & girls, Sharon & Kif, and all others. Kilee lived a beautiful life and left a wonderful impact.

Kilee was a wonderful physical therapist and had a real passion for the profession. The field of physical therapy is better because of her. She will be missed. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
