Joshua R. Hartwig, 25, of Lincoln, was tragically killed January 31, 2016, in Lincoln. Joshua was born April 16, 1990, in Lincoln to Douglas Hartwig and Kris (Hartwig) Branker. “Bub,” as he was affectionately known, was a tremendous young man. He was an award winning Special Olympics athlete. Joshua loved Husker sports, especially football and baseball. He purchased season tickets for baseball every year and sat on the 3rd base berm so he could interact with the players. He was always offering words of encouragement no matter how they played.
He celebrated his birthday every year by taking friends and family to the Red White Game. Josh was a FoodNet volunteer at Calvary UMC Church and Barnabas Community Center feeding the hungry. He always had a kind word, hug and smile for everyone.
Survived by parents Douglas Hartwig, Lincoln; Kris (Jason) Branker, Lincoln; Dennis (Melissa) Showen, Beatrice; sister Katie (Ben) Marshall, Lincoln; niece Rebecca Hartwig-Marshall, Lincoln; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. on Thursday at Roper and Sons, 4300 “0” St., Lincoln. Celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Capitol City Christian Church, 7800 Holdrege St., Lincoln. To honor and celebrate Josh, please wear your Husker gear and blue jeans.
Share a Memory or Condolence
I met your sister today, Josh, just coincidence but I hope it helped her to share your story with me, and I’m glad I “met” you through her. I’ll think of her and the pain your loved ones will always feel for your loss, but this many years later, you are still bringing strangers together. I will think of you and your family now. May you Rest in Peace. You sound like a wonderful young man.
