John M. Amen, age 71, entered the Gates of Heaven on October 12, 2021. John passed away peacefully at home with his wife and three children by his side.
John was born August 13, 1950. John lived in Lincoln as a child, and in 1968 became a proud graduate of Lincoln High School.
John married Camelia (Cammy) Deterding on April 9, 1972, in Arnold, NE. Three children were born to this union, Dawn, Travis, and Holly. After living in Lincoln for the first few years of their marriage, the family moved to Gothenberg, NE. While living in Gothenberg, John accepted Jesus into his life. John spent time helping with the AWANA Club at church and made lifelong friends.
John had many jobs and worked hard to support his family. As a teenager, he worked at the Amen Grocery Store in the South Bottoms in Lincoln, NE. He was also an apprentice printer at the Journal Star, a Fireman for the City of Lincoln, worked for Kawasaki and the City of Gothenburg. When he became a Police Officer in 1985, John moved his family back to Lincoln. He proudly served the City of Lincoln for 21 years and truly enjoyed his job. John won many awards as an Officer for LPD. One of the biggest honors of John’s life was pinning a badge on his son, Travis, as Travis followed in his father’s footsteps and became an officer with LPD.
John valued education and ensured his children obtained college degrees. John and Cammy were inseparable, and enjoyed their time camping, woodworking, and riding motorcycles. Photography and painting were some of the additional hobbies John enjoyed, and he spent many hours in these pursuits after his retirement and move to Cammy’s childhood home in Arnold, NE. Sam and Gibbs, John’s Australian Shepherds, always held a special place in his life. John loved his children and grandchildren and, after moving back to Lincoln, could be found cheering them on at ball games, plays, concerts and other performances. John was extremely proud of his family, who will always remember his constant support, love of candy, movies, and Hu Hot.
John was preceded in death by his granddaughter Willa Mae Stutzman, parents, Evelyn and Godfred “Duffy” Amen, and brother George Amen.
John Miles Amen is survived by his wife of 49 years Cammy, daughter and son-in-law Dawn and Brian Witt, son and daughter-in-law Travis and Julane Amen, daughter and son-in-law Holly and Boe Stutzman. John had ten grandchildren: Gracey, Christian, Matthew and Faith Witt, Jack Amen, Emma, Chance, Hudson, Millie and Ezra Stutzman. Extended family and many friends have blessed John with their friendship throughout the years and for that he was always thankful.

I’m sorry to hear of your loss. I didn’t really know John, but I did know his older children as I babysat for them for a couple of years in Gothenburg. I just ran across a picture of them a few days ago, so was quite surprised to see his obituary today. May God’s peace that passes all understanding give you comfort at this time.
– Lauri (Block) Pobanz
My condolences to John’s family. He was a good man, whose LPD career overlapped with mine. He was always a pleasure to work with. R.J. Kelly (LPD retired)

Lots of great memories of John from our days at LPD. He was the “go to” guy for our DWI enforcement efforts. Later, he looked after Nancy as the SRO at LSE. We appreciated all he did.
– Nancy and John J. Becker, LPD325
My prayers and thoughts for the family, during this time of loss. Uncle John will be missed. Love
