John Henry Wehr, 78, of Tempe, AZ passed quietly in his sleep at home on Saturday January 2, 2018. John was born in on October 15, 1940 in Lincoln, NE to A.C. and Katherine (Hunker) Wehr. He grew up with his parents and older sister, Mary Jo, in a little house on Dudley. He had a passion for reading which drove him to a career as a bookseller. He graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1962, and worked for many years for Nebraska Book Co. In 1963 he married Roberta Godsey, and they had three children: Gregory in ‘64, Donald in ‘65, and Michelle in ‘72. In ‘78 the family moved to Tempe where John opened his own store, “Books, Etc.” with business partner, F. Dean Keller. He shared his love of books with the community for about 20 years. John and Bertie parted ways in ’81 but always remained friends. He spent the last 20 years enjoying retirement, playing bridge and other games when folks would get together, and watching shows with his caregivers. In 2016 he met Ruth, who brought great joy to his final days. John was a loving father/grandfather and faithful friend.
John was pre-deceased by his parents Albert & Katherine Wehr, his sister Mary Jo Andersen, and his niece Cynthia Dahl. He is survived by his sons Gregory and Donald Wehr, daughter & son-in-law Michelle & Aaron Pulliam, granddaughter Sarah Pulliam, nephew Peter Dahl, great niece Ainsley Dahl, former spouse Roberta Wehr, and girlfriend Ruth Waldvogel, extended family and many friends.
Services will be held in Arizona at 11:00 a.m., on Friday (1/12) with viewing one hour prior to services at King of Glory Lutheran Church, 2085 E Southern Ave, Tempe, AZ 85282.
Services in Lincoln will take place 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, (1/17) at Roper and Sons South Lincoln Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Drive, Lincoln, NE 68516 with a 3:00 p.m. interment at Cedarview Cemetery in Doniphan, NE.
