John met his wife, Dr. Shirley Anne Louise (Langhus) Pflug, on a blind date set up by a mutual friend. They were married on June 20, 1971 in Lincoln, NE. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Bill, Fred, Mildred, and Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife Shirley, brother- and sister-in-law Herb and Edna Langhus, and many nieces and nephews.
John’s Christian faith was central to his life. He was a lifetime resident of Lincoln, NE and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He attended Lincoln High and graduated from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. John spent his professional career at Bankers (Ameritas) Life Insurance, attaining the position of Vice President of Underwriting. When he retired 38 years ago in 1986, he was the longest tenured employee in the company, having worked there for 38 years.
He will be remembered for many things, not least his love for ice cream, automobiles, and a good joke. John encouraged his family to put their trust in Jesus and to keep Him at the center of their lives. John’s deep love for Christ was evident in the kindness and respect he showed all he met. The marriage he built with Shirley was a picture of Christ’s faithful love for us—full of tenderness, encouragement, respect, joy, and beauty. John will be sorely missed, but his family rejoices to know he is now at home with his Savior, who loves him most of all.
There will be a memorial service celebrating God’s gift of Eternal Life to John on Saturday, February 10, at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln, NE. Memorials are suggested to: Trinity Lutheran Church Foundation.
