James R. Buckwalter

July 5, 1937 - October 22, 2023

James (Jim) R. Buckwalter, age 86, passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at Ambassador Health of Lincoln. Jim was born in Pittsburgh, PA on July 5, 1937, to George and Clara Buckwalter. He grew up in the Pittsburgh, PA area and enrolled in the U.S. Air Force in 1955. He met his wife, Joan Elizabeth Mueller, while serving in the Air Force and they were married on May 8, 1964. After 20 years of service in the Air Force, Jim worked as a realtor in Lincoln, NE.

Jim never met a person he couldn’t befriend, was an avid Huskers fan, and was very active in his community. He volunteered with Barnabus Community at Sheridan Lutheran Church, Junior Achievement, Nebraska Motorist Assist Program, and Tabitha Meals on Wheels. He was a member of Sheridan Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #3, and Lancaster Lodge #54.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan; children, Jeffrey (Heather) Buckwalter, Matthew (Michele) Buckwalter, Stephanie (Troy) Martin, and Jodi (Brian) Beard; grandchildren Hannah (Eli) Barber, Sydney (Anthony) Calcagno, Rachel Buckwalter, Andrew Buckwalter, Allyson Beard, Emma Martin, Alex Buckwalter, Ben Buckwalter, Carson Beard, and Caitlin Buckwalter; great-granddaughter, Evelyn Barber; brother, Larry (Carol) Buckwalter; brothers-in-law, Dale (Bobbi) Mueller, and Dennis Mueller (Ann Jordan); sister-in-law Karen Mueller; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, George and Clara Buckwalter; brother-in-law Herman Mueller; and sisters-in-law, Ruby Heinke and Darlene McGee. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at Sheridan Lutheran Church, 6955 Old Cheney Road, Lincoln, NE 68516. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Tabitha Meals on Wheels, 4720 Randolph Street, Lincoln, NE 68510; Barnabas Community, Sheridan Lutheran Church 6955 Old Cheney Road, Lincoln, NE 68516; and Junior Achievement, 300 68th Street Plaza, Suite 110, Lincoln, NE 68510.

I feel blessed that Jim and my paths crossed. He definitely befriended everyone and was so easy to talk to. He was truly interested in you. I was lucky to talk with Jim regularly when he exercised at LifePoite, he will be missed. Prayers of comfort to the family.

I met Jim early in my real estate career, maybe 1993 or so. Absolute nicest guy ever. We had several transactions together over the years following and they always went well and he was always great to work with.

My husband sat with Jim at NU Volleyball games for several years. Always enjoyed him – he was a great fan. I met him when I attended games with Jerry and really enjoyed him also. Condolences to his family.
