I will miss running into Glen at the Lincoln VA. Last time I saw him there, we were both getting our 3rd COVID boosters. We laughed and chopped it up. Even though he was ill, he never complained and had a genuine smile for everyone he encountered. His uncle was married to my aunt so we considered ourselves family. Slumber peacefully and may you rest in power!

The French word for “heart” is “cour.” From that in English we talk of “encouragement” and “courage.” Glenn was a man of great heart. He gave encouragement and he expressed profound courage in challenging health issues over decades. Although we didn’t visit often, anytime with Glenn was lively and fun-filled. A special tribute is due to Sandy for her patient care and commitment to Glenn. Gillian’s comment was “the smile in this picture is the smile on Glenn’s face when Sandy, his children or his grandchildren walked into the room.” That smile continues to radiate among all who knew him and were blessed by his life.

I met Glenn in the second grade at Clinton elementary school. We were friends way back then and I’m proud to say I’m still his friend now. My condolence to the family, for you have lost a fantastic husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed. May he rest in peace

Where do I start , Glenn’s home was always open ! His Heart was pure when it came to his Friends and Family. I spent time daily for a number of years , even to the point of Sandy asking me if I was staying for supper. She even taught me to appreciate greens. Halloween was a fun event at the Payne house. Glenn and I would hand out candy to the kids, the children knew they’d get double treats at the Payne Garage. Sandy always made Chili and Cinnamon rolls for us. The 4th of July was one heck of a production at their house. We blocked of the street, legally, and all the neighbors celebrated the Holiday. Grilling in the driveway was a frequent occurrence along with a massive array of food and drink. Glenn liked hot peppers, I once bought him some Ghost peppers, I had them put in a paper sack to protect my hands , they that HOT. He bit into one and it even got a response from him. What a joyous and caring man he was , recently we’ve not been in touch due to mutual health issues. I will always Treasure having been able to call Glenn and Sandy Friends. Rest In Peace and Thank You for your Service to God and Country. I have Spoken with Pride !

Our bond started before I got here. My Mom shared stories about how much my Uncle Glenn adored me as a baby. Of course, I don’t remember back that far, for me it started when I couldn’t wait to get to Uncle Glenn & Aunt Sandy’s so I could ride my cousin Christopher’s big wheel with his fake rifle in hand. At 44, there’s so many parts of your childhood you don’t remember. But the time I spent as a child with my Aunt & Uncle is clear as day for me. The only other place outside of my home that I felt safe. It was structured, oh….they had rules. You ain’t leaving that kitchen table until that plate is clean. Aunt Sandy didn’t play about that! Although, there were a few times Shay and I snuck some green beans to Sheba. Lol. As I came into motherhood, I was fearful. But when my Aunt Sandy & Uncle Glenn stepped up, they removed any fears I had. They loved and cared for Paris just as they loved and cared for me. I know it’s selfish of me not to want you to leave me. I know you’re no longer suffering and you’re at peace. Enjoying your Momma Marie, Maxim, and Papa, Lois. I absolutely know you’ve checked on Ms. Alberta Cooke. But the thought of me never being able to pick up that phone and talk to my Uncle Glenn for 2 hours again has broken me. Uncle Glenn, if I never told you, I have always had the utmost respect for you. You are an honorable man, wonderful Father, teacher, counselor, brother, and friend. The knowledge I’ve gained from you over my lifetime is why I am who I am today—also probably why all my houses are a mess because I’m constantly trying to remodel them by myself and why I spend so much money at Lowes. (lol) I will use everything you instilled in me to ensure my son is exactly like his Great Uncle Glenn. Aunt Sandy, I love you. My heart is with you today and for the rest of my days. I am forever grateful for you and your love for me. How blessed are we to have a “Superman” in our family (Maxim) and a hero (Glenn). I love you Uncle Glenn. I will see you when I get there. -Gia
