Obituary

Gerald “Jerry” Dean Bryant

August 5, 1941 - February 16, 2023

Gerald Dean Bryant (Jerry), 81, passed away February 16, 2023 at Southlake Village Rehabilitation Facility following a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was surrounded by his family during his final days. Gerald was born August 5, 1941, in Humboldt Nebraska.

His childhood was full of both joy and heartbreak. He lost his father at a young age and his mother passed away when he was a teenager. His Aunt and Uncle helped raise him and his younger brother after his mother passed away. He lived in Fredonia, Kansas until Fourth Grade and then moved back to Humboldt after the death of his father to be closer to his mother’s family. He was the third out of four boys in the family. He enjoyed school, playing outdoors, and playing sports. He played baseball as a boy and later softball as an adult. He was a lifelong Saint Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed time on neighboring farms in the summer. He was a great friend and brother. He graduated from Humboldt High School in 1959. He attended the University of Nebraska for a short time and then joined the Air Force.

While on leave in the Air Force he met Judy (Hoke) Bryant. They started dating and married September 2, 1962. They had two sons and a daughter. Jerry learned accounting and finance through the Air Force. After his service, he worked for 42 years for the Nebraska Department of Revenue. Jerry and Judy were members of Christ United Methodist Church in Lincoln, NE. Jerry loved spending time with his wife and family, attending so many activities of his children and grandchildren. He was a Scout Leader for many years and enjoyed many camping trips, including going to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Jerry enjoyed fishing and small game hunting with friends and his sons. He also enjoyed gardening, tinkering around the house and even feeding wild turkeys on their acreage. After retirement he and Judy spent many years enjoying winters in Texas with friends.

Gerald is survived by his children; sons Daniel (Kim) Bryant, David (Candice) Bryant, daughter Deana (Gary) Kumpf; 10 grandchildren; Danielle (Jacob) Oshlo, Zachary Bryant, Beau Bryant, Alix (Colten) Mach, Elizabeth (Shaylee) Flax, Chase Bryant, Noah Kumpf, Josie (Elijah) Lenton, Ethan Kumpf, Rylie Bryant; 5 great-grandchildren; Malcolm Oshlo, Nora Bryant, Rhyker Mach, Everett Oshlo, Cason Mach; several nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by his wife Judy, parents, Harry Allen and Mary Ruth (Overstreet) Bryant, and four brothers, Harry, Eugene, Robert and infant Kenneth.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at Roper and Sons South Chapel (3950 Hohensee Dr).

I enjoyed getting to know Jerry and Judy through my friendship with their son Dave. Jerry and Judy were wonderful people, they loved watching sports at LSE. They always welcomed me as a teacher/coach at LSE. Jerry would take us all quail hunting down by Humboldt and it was special to go with him and his sons. He enjoyed life, the simple life was just fine with him. I liked that about Jerry. He always was a positive man, caring of others, and always a smile on his face. I attended Christ UMC as did Jerry and Judy. After my divorce I attended alone and would usually sit near Jerry/Judy. It was so enjoyable to talk with them, it had a calming effect on me. I loved visiting with them any time about anything. We would laugh about something by the end of our visit. Jerry and Judy raised great children and certainly lived a well-lived life. I know they are together in heaven today.

My friend Don Bougger and I got to know Jerry and Judy after having their children at Pound Middle School, where we both taught. In the summer we did painting and painted their home a couple of times through the years. We both always commented on what nice people they were. They were very humorous and easy to visit and work for. Our sympathy to their children and family, Dan, Dave and Deana.

We were so sorry to hear of Jerry’s passing. While I know this is a blessing in so many ways, it simply doesn’t make it easier. Jerry was one of the kindest gentlemen I ever did meet. I saw him at so many basketball games through the years and it was always good to sit down and chat with him. I’m so happy that he finally has the chance to be back with Judy, but he will be missed by many. All our prayers and let us know if there is anything we can do now or in the future.

Jerry became a mentor and friend when we worked together at the Department of Revenue. He taught me so many things due to his knowledge and experience. He was kind, thoughtful and fun. While we worked hard, we shared many laughs. He had a way of making everyone comfortable, even during tax season. It was a pleasure working with your Dad. God’s blessings and comfort to all of you.

I became acquainted with Jerry in the past couple years. My parents lived at Southlake, too (my dad still does). Jerry was one of the first people my dad met. When they found out they both had southeast Nebraska ties, they became friends. They passed their hometown newspapers back and forth. I would stop by Jerry’s table as I left around lunchtime. He was always so kind even though he had physical struggles. My prayers for your family. May you find comfort in knowing how dearly many people held Jerry in their hearts!

John and I were blessed to have known Judy and Jerry after my brother Gary and Deanna married. Wonderful and fun people. Full of life and smiles. We know they had full lives and are in their heavenly homes looking down at their family and thinking … we did good!
