Cynthia Jean Nelson

Cynthia Jean Nelson
March 1, 1962 – March 15, 2023

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Cynthia Jean Nelson, who peacefully departed from this world on March 15, 2023, at the age of 61. Cynthia, born on March 1, 1962, in Dayton, Ohio, to Earl and Eunice Higgins, was a remarkable woman who touched the hearts of all who knew her.

Cynthia was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Mitch, and a devoted mother to her children, Denys Steele, Edward Steele, and James Steele, as well as her cherished pet son, Jack. Cynthia was also a doting grandmother to five grandchildren, whom she adored more than anything in the world. Cynthia was a shining example of selflessness and compassion, always putting her friends and family’s needs above her own.

Cynthia grew up in Nebraska with her two brothers, Mark Higgins and Timothy Higgins, and later settled in Lincoln with her family. Her warmth and generosity knew no bounds, and she had a talent for making everyone she met feel loved and welcomed. Cynthia had a passion for exploring new places, and loved nothing more than traveling and experiencing new things. She loved gardening- finding joy in nurturing and watching her plants grow.

Cynthia’s impact on the lives of those around her is immeasurable, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. While we mourn her passing, we take comfort in knowing that her memory will be treasured forever by her loving family and friends.

Cynthia’s passing has left an unfillable void in our hearts, but her legacy will live on in the memories of those whose lives she touched. She will always be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family. May she rest in eternal peace.

Family members include her husband, Mitch; children, Denys Steele, Cincinnati, OH, Edward Steele, Portland, OR, James Steele, Lincoln, and beloved pet son Jack; 5 grandchildren; brothers, Mark (Lora) Higgins, South Range, WI and Timothy (Michele) Higgins, Omaha; father, Earl Higgins, Lincoln.

Cynthia was preceded in death by her mother, Eunice Higgins.

I appreciated the service yesterday for Cindi. It brought back memories of being in music together in high school. She was a great flute player! She introduced a lot of us to Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson (Cindi was waaay too cool for rural Nebraska!) and I can never hear that music without thinking of her. Cindi’s laugh, her ability to accept others as they were (while not compromising what she believed or who she was) and her sunny spirit – even when things weren’t perfect will be things I’ll keep with me. I don’t have a photo to share but I’m attaching one of Ian Anderson and thinking about Cindi playing along – hope it makes you smile.

Greatest laugh ever! Great camping trips, concerts, and girl talk.
