Doris LaVern Dahl Sinkule

Doris LaVern Dahl Sinkule, 85, of Lincoln, passed away February 11, 2019. Doris was born on August 5th, 1933 to Ben and Hilda Dahl in Davey, Nebraska. Because Hilda was not in the best of health, Doris’ Aunt and Uncle offered to take her and she was raised by Violet and Allen Dahl, just a mile or two from her brothers and sisters. She went to school with them and they all grew up together. Violet and Allen were also blessed with a son, Roger, and Doris and they loved each other as if they were brother and sister, and not cousins.

Doris graduated from Ceresco High School in 1951. Doris went to work at Continental Bank, where she met the love of her life, Dick Sinkule.

Dick and Doris were married on September 26, 1954. Their first son, Bruce, was born in March of 1956. Lori was born in April of 1958. Steve was born in September of 1960 and Julie in January 1962. Dick and Doris moved from Lincoln to York in 1962, Gresham in 1964 and then to Dick’s hometown of Crete in 1968 where they remained for 23 years. Doris worked on and off including the Dairy Queen and Crete Hospital. Most of all, she was wonderful banker’s wife.

Dick and Doris moved to West Point in 1991, with Dick’s new job in Bancroft. They lived in a beautiful blue Cape Cod house with a pool and enjoyed many years there, playing with their children and grandchildren in the pool.

Doris loved to garden and her favorite things were large hanging plants anywhere she could find to hang them.

Dick retired from full time banking in 2000 and they moved back to Lincoln in 2015.
Doris was an animal lover and her beloved pets were Pooch Hound, Benjie, Hilde, and Opal. She found great joy in her pets and grand pets.

Dick and Doris loved to travel to Colorado, Annapolis, Maryland and South Dakota, where they had a cabin on Big Stone Lake in retirement.

Doris loved to garden, fish, decorate her homes, being a mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. Doris was the ultimate hostess and loved to throw large parties. The holidays were a special time for Doris and she relished Christmas Day, when there were enough presents under the tree to fill a room. It was a day when you could not see the floor when the presents were unwrapped.

Dick and Doris also spent their marriage dancing. They would dance 3 to 4 nights a week at the ballrooms in the areas. They also belonged to the Country Club in every nearby town, with the Friend Country Club as a fan favorite on Friday nights for crab legs. Dick and Doris loved to gather their children together and spend the night eating and laughing.

Doris also had hearing issues and was not a fan of her hearing aids. Dick and the kids often had a chuckle when you would ask Doris a question. No matter the question, her stock answer was “I’m fine.” “Doris, what is your favorite color?” “I’m fine. “

Doris had a short illness that began last Thursday and ended peacefully and quietly on Monday morning, surrounded by her loving children, when God accepted her into the Kingdom of Heaven. Doris was a special soul and will be greatly missed by everyone who came into her life.

Family members include her husband Richard “Dick” Sinkule; daughters Lori (Scott) Kiefer, and Julie (Tyler) Wentz; sons Bruce Sinkule, and Steve (Judy) Sinkule; sister Lucille (Dennis) Beranek; brothers John Dahl and Roger (Lennice) Dahl.
