Doris Jean Crayton

Doris J. Crayton, 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 11, 2020, at The Monarch hospice care facility in Lincoln, Nebraska after a brief illness. Her family truly appreciate the loving care that was provided by The Monarch caregivers.

Doris Jean Crayton was born to Glen E. and Rosa M. (Kugel) Lewis on March 30, 1933 in the village of Western, Nebraska. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Western, Nebraska and she attended Western Public School.

On June 29, 1957, she married Franklin D. Crayton and they resided in Lincoln. Frank’s Air Force duty also took them to New Mexico, Hawaii, Ohio, and California. Frank passed away on April 12, 1981 and Doris remained in Lincoln for her later years. Of all the places she lived, Doris favored Hawaii, and getting to listen to singers Don Ho and Elvis Presley.

Doris’s work career included Blue Cross Blue Shield of Omaha, Russell Stover Candy Company of Lincoln, and the Lancaster County Dept of Motor Vehicles. In her later years, she enjoyed working as the manager of Merle Norman Cosmetics Studio in Lincoln.

Doris enjoyed many years of ballroom dancing at PlaMor Ballroom and playing Keno in Denton. Doris also enjoyed time at the Flying V Ballroom, Lincoln Legion Club and VFW. Doris attended St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. She had a passion for playing cards at Brentwood Estates, where she had resided since 2016. She loved her many friends and staff whom she met at Brentwood, especially her dear friend, Jim Wright.

Doris is survived by her sister, Ethel Jirka of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Ivan Tyrrell of Lincoln; son, Steven (Cathy) Crayton of Kerrville, Texas; daughters Barbara (Tom) Rolfes of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Debbie (Delton) Bouza of Murphy, Texas. Doris has three grandsons, Eli Miller and Adam Rolfes of Lincoln, and Tyler Bouza of Richardson, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Rosa Lewis of Western, and brothers, Earl Lewis of Sioux Falls, SD; Chester Lewis of Brodhead, WI; Lee Lewis of Brodhead, WI; Lloyd Lewis of Sand Springs, OK; and sisters Fern Tyrrell of Lincoln, NE; Mildred Teal of Lincoln, NE; Reba Lewis of Western, NE; and grandson, Christopher Miller of Lincoln.

A brief graveside service will be held at Wyuka–Fairview Cemetery in Lincoln on Wednesday, June 17, 10:00am. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
