Walter Richard “Dick” Baker

June 20, 1936 - November 7, 2024

Walter Richard “Dick” Baker, 88, of Lincoln passed away November 7, 2024. Born June 20, 1936, in Lincoln, NE to Walter and Gretta (Pratz) Baker.

Graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School in 1954, and the University of Nebraska in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in education where he was a member of the Cornhusker marching band and President of Tau Kappa Epsilon. He returned to the University of Nebraska to pursue a career in pharmacy.

Dick married Karen Banks in Burwell, NE in 1958. He operated Baker’s Rexall Pharmacy in Havelock and became active in his community serving as President of the Havelock Business Association, Lancaster County Pharmaceutical Society, Nebraska Pharmacists Association, Treasurer of the Nebraska Pharmacists Association, Lincoln Library Board of Directors, Lincoln City Council member, Council representative on the Lincoln General Hospital Board of Directors, Council representative on the Lincoln-Lancaster County Railroad Transportation Safety Board. In 1977, named Chairman of the Lincoln City Council. He served on the Nebraska Sate Central Committee of the Republican Party.

Dick’s first wife, Karen passed away in January of 1977, married his present wife Marti in June of 1978.

Dick sold his Physicians Building Pharmacy in 1978 and ran for Lancaster County Clerk and elected in 1979. and subsequently re-elected 3 times. He worked evenings and weekends for several local pharmacies. In 1981, Hy-Vee Food and Drug where Dick worked part-time. Dick and Marti moved to Sun Lake, Arizona in 1993.

In 2004, Dick served as President of Palo Verde Men’s Golf Association. Moved back to Lincoln in April of 2021.

A 60-year member of George Washington Masonic Lodge #250, Martha Washington Chapter #153 of the Eastern Star, Sesostris Temple of the Shrine, Lincoln Elks Lodge #80, Sons of the American Legion Squad #3, and former Captain of the Sesostris Shrine Band.

Survived by his wife Marti, son Paul (Denise) Baker, Scottsdale, AZ, stepson Scott (Julie) Macke, Firth, stepdaughter Tracy Macke, Lincoln; grandchildren Rachel Baker, Ryan Macke, Tanner Macke, LaTia Macke, and Sammie.

Preceded in death by his parents and first wife Karen.
Memorial service: 11:00 am Saturday, December 7, 2024, St. Mark’s United Methodist Chapel, 8550 Pioneers Blvd.
No visitation/cremation
