Marjorie Barrett Hewitt

April 26, 1932 - October 6, 2024

Marjorie Barrett Hewitt, 92, of Lincoln, was born April 26, 1932, to Harold O. and Helen S. Barrett in Lexington, Nebraska. She passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 6, 2024.

Marge left Lexington in 1950 to attend Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska, where she met her future husband, Jim. They were married in Lexington on August 8, 1954.

Marge taught third grade at the elementary school housed at Lincoln Northeast until her first child was born in the spring of 1956.  Marge described herself as a homemaker but as soon as all of her children were in school, she returned to teaching at Westminster Presbyterian Pre-School.  She also served on the campaign staff for U.S. Congressman Doug Bereuter in the 1980s and 1990s.

Marge was active in Chapter DX, PEO; various Boards at First Plymouth Church; the Friends of Lied Board; The Nebraska Auditions Committee for the Metropolitan Opera and the Tuesday Review Club. She was also a member of the First Plymouth Choir for many years.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents; her brother the Hon. William C. Barrett and his wife Elsie; her son Will and her husband Jim.  Among her survivors are her children, daughter Mary J. Hewitt (Lincoln); son John C. Hewitt (Elizabeth Hansen, Omaha); daughter Martha (Chris) Livingston (Lincoln); six grandsons, one great-granddaughter, and her beloved cat, Mondo.

Private family interment.  Service at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2024, followed by a luncheon at First Plymouth Church, 2000 D Street, Lincoln, NE 68502.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the music programming at First Plymouth Church, or Hastings College for the outdoor sculpture fund established in memory of Marjorie and James Hewitt and Lauren Hewitt.
