Obituary

Nancy Lee (Roeder) Elliott

February 21, 1956 - October 19, 2023

Nancy Lee (Roeder) Elliott was born February 21, 1956 to Mildred (Shafer) and Norvel Roeder. She passed away on October 19, 2023.

Nancy was raised in Waverly, Nebraska and was the youngest of five children. She attended Waverly High School where she was a two time volleyball state champion, boasting an undefeated record during her varsity squad tenure. She then attended court reporter school in Des Moines, Iowa and subsequently returned to Nebraska to work as a court reporter in District Court for 40 years. Nancy married John Lee Elliott on September 26, 1987 during a ceremony held in the Sunken Gardens of Lincoln, NE. Together, they shared 36 wonderful years of marriage and had one son, Spencer Lee Elliott.

Nancy was a strong, independent spirit with a forward-thinking mindset and generous heart. She was a wealth of well-rounded perspective but had a special way of listening intently and offering advice only when asked, which made her a safe haven for so many. She was a lover of reading (especially John Grisham books), Ina Garten recipes, tennis, Husker volleyball, sunshine and most of all, her family. She cherished her role as a mother to Spencer and grandmother to her two grandsons, Benjamin and Micah. The grandkids and “Nana,” as the boys so affectionally called her, brought each other tremendous joy. She gave the very best of herself to her loved ones and will be missed deeply but remembered always.

She is survived by her husband John, son Spencer, daughter-in-law Claire and grandsons Benjamin and Micah; sisters Mira Wiegmann, Merna Smith and Susan Bray; brothers-in-law Richard Wiegmann, Lucas Smith and Steve Bray; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Jean and Rob Brandenburg; nieces and nephews Melina, Sarah, Flora, Seth, Jacob, Kyle and Ryan.

To honor Nancy and her many years of support for local charitable foundations, her family requests that donations to the Matt Talbot Kitchen be made in her memory.

Nancy was a cherished friend since the first time I met her through the elementary school where Spencer attended with our daughter, Jordan. They were fast friends and so were Nancy and I. We enjoyed so many times over the years and even took a family trip to Disney World together. After we moved away, I cherished our friendship from afar through phone calls, texts, and occasional stops by their house when I was on my way to Kearney to visit my parents. I am so thankful to have known her. She was a loving spirit who gave sound advice and I will always hold dear our times together. She had a wonderful giggle and laugh which I will always remember. I pray that God will comfort John, Spencer, Ben and Micah, as well as her sisters and the many people who were touched by her. What a reunion she will have in heaven someday with the many people she touched!

Nancy, Patti and I went out for dinner and movies in our younger years. Waiters would try to figure out why I was with two women and how they were related. Nancy was like a sister to Patti and me. We had a dinner planned but Patti had to go on a business trip. Nancy and I decided to go anyway. One of Patti’s co-workers saw us together so the rumors were thick when Patti got to work. Patti played it for all it was worth. We laughed about that for a long time. We welcomed her marriage to John and the birth of Spencer. We will cherish our good memories forever.

Nancy has been a part of my life from my earliest memories. We grew up in a unique group of kids, friends, my group of friends were bound in a way few are lucky enough to experience. We grew together. We played together. We learned together. We prayed together. Our lives moved together and we watched each other grow into who we are and were today. Nancy was the first person I proposed to. A kindergarten fiance, I remember feeling happy when she accepted my request. It all passed in just a few days and life went on. Nancy is the first of this group to die and it saddens me greatly. I have cared so deeply for this group all of my life. Nancy has left me with only the best of memories. I will carry these for all of my remaining days. Thank You Nancy I have carried you in my heart forever.
