Obituary

Todd J. Scherer

January 6, 1961 - March 9, 2023

Todd J. Scherer, 62, son of Leo Scherer Jr. and Barbara (Rhoades) Scherer, was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 6, 1961 and passed away in Grand Island, Nebraska on March 9, 2023.

Think about it!

Todd

Todd grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and graduated from Lincoln East High School in 1979. His high school career was spent participating in all sports with success: football, wrestling, and track. He attended Nebraska Wesleyan University, changing course after his freshman year to pursue fulltime his passion for horses and the horse racing industry.

49 years of being on the “backside”, with 42 years of being a professional in the horse industry, all started when Todd’s Grandfather, Arnold Stumbaugh, introduced him to his first hands-on experience in 1974 at the age of 13. In 1981, Todd experienced his first earned win as a horse trainer. Over the course of 42 years, he left his mark in 27 states and 49 horse racing tracks.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by 2 sisters and their husbands, his niece and his nephew, and his furry friends, Little Guy and the “fillies”, Truffles, Dumplin, Gucci, Twinkle, and Glamour.

As Todd would say, “Think about it!”

A private family service was held. The Tribute Slideshow and Memorial Service Recordings appear below.

I work at Canterbury park with Todd in the test barn. He would come in and ask how his girls were doing, he always made sure the horses had plenty of water, he was the nicest most most amazing respectful man I have ever met. Canterbury park isn’t going to be the same without him.

I first met Todd at Sunland Park New Mexico in December, 1987 and we instantly became best of friends. He moved into my apartment and we somehow survived the meet, both of us broke as heck. We had so much in common, both the same age; both being from Lincoln, both big horse racing degenerates, same friends, loved the same sports teams, etc. Throughout the years since then we’ve had so many laughs, dinners together, drinks together. I considered him my brother. I am still in shock over what has happened to him as I know Todd was such a loving and giving person to everyone he met. My heart is broken over such an incredible loss. Rest in peace Todd! I’ll see you in the next life.

I’ve known Todd for 15 years. Always had a smile and a good thing to say. He helped me out a ton when I worked on the backside at Canterbury. He will be missed by my family and me forever. He was a great horseman and his memory will never waver. RIP Todd we all love you.

I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to meet Todd, in Altoona Iowa, he was working as a foreman for Tim Martin, I had just left hot springs in Arkansas and wanted to work in Iowa. And that’s when I met Todd , I also remember Todd working in Hot Springs Arkansas at Oaklawn racetrack as well. He was always willing to help you with anything regardless of what it was Todd he was a perfectionist when it came to cleaning stalls and he would take his time regardless of what he was doing and show you how to do it properly. I just enjoyed sitting down talking to Todd after the work was over we just sitting just watch other people and Barns working. He could tell you about every trainer on the track he can tell you about every jockey on the track he could tell you everything about everybody on the back side, I think we went out to eat a couple of times at the grandstand and Todd was just a joy to be around. He is a very kind human being and that’s what I remember about him. Such a shame.

There are to many to share just one. Todd and I would frequent a little bar in Hot Springs and there was always one of us who had to much, so the other had to make sure we got to the Barn the next morning!! We never ever missed a days work and thats 7 days a week and 365 days a year!! Todd was oneof the BEST if Not the Best Horsemen I ever worked with and taught me so much! I think of Todd daily and wish i would have called him on this last day of his Racing Career! This has taken a piece of my Heart!! On a Good Note Todd You and Harvey have one for me and I will see you both soon! Todd and I shared a Birthday and it will Not be the Same!! I’m a Rambling so let me Say Goodnight to all.
