Obituary

Mellicent “Millie” Sue Adams (Raines)

November 21, 1936 - February 10, 2023

Mellicent Sue Adams (Raines) died February 10, 2023, in Hickman, NE; born November 21, 1936, to Roy and Susie (Hartley) Raines of Horton, Kansas.

Millie was raised in Topeka, Kansas where she graduated from Topeka High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Charles Ardean Adams, on April 17, 1955. Together they had three children and were married for thirty years at the time of Charles’ passing in 1985. Millie had a strong passion for history and travel and relished working with American Field Service (AFS) International Student Organization as a student and family liaison. Through this organization, she met young people from across the world that led to her own adventures to Barbados, Belgium, France, Germany, England, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Mongolia… and a few others for sure. Millie’s career was family first, being there when the need was greatest, but also was a retail floral shop manager in Topeka, KS and later as Girl Scout educator for at-risk urban youth in Salina, KS. Millie will be fondly remembered by her neighbors of Fencerock Court Apartments in Hickman, NE as always having a beautiful garden and flowers to share.

Family includes son, Mark (Melissa) Adams of Farmington, MN, four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; daughter, Julie (Dale) Swenson of Lindsborg, KS, two grandchildren; and son Stacy (Sandra) Adams of Firth, NE, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

No viewing or services.

Memorials are being collected for installation of tree plantings for residents of the Fencerock Court Apartments.

Condolences and memorials can be sent to the family, 10500 Gage Road, Firth, NE 68358.

Mellicent “Millie” Sue Adams was known to many as “Millie”, for me she was simply Mum or Mum Adams. Mum and her late husband Charles Adams open their doors to an organization called American Field Service (AFS) and I happened to have been placed with this family for almost one year from August ‘78 to June ‘79 as a foreign exchange student. It was a huge eye opening experience for me coming from a small tropical Caribbean island called Barbados. At the time that Mum and Dad Adams (Millie & Charles) hosted me during my stay, Stacy lived at home and attended Shawnee Heights High School with me. I can only say that my love for this family was equivalent to my biological family and we’ve kept in touch over years since ‘78. Mum was an active lady always giving of herself to charitable organizations and always giving encouragement when the need arose. When I had a challenge with something, she often asked questions to stimulate my thought process, thereby coming to a well thought-out solution or a ‘to be’ action plan I needed to implement without her having to tell me that this is what I needed to do. She allowed me to reason in a loving and gentle way without confrontation or friction. As the years rolled on we stayed in touch via phone as well as with me having the opportunity to visit her with my wife along with our daughters. She too, traveled to Barbados 🇧🇧 to spend a vacation here with Dad’s sister. I have never heard Mum complain for or about anything. Her three children she raised I have the greatest of respect for and whom I refer to as my brothers and sister. To each of them Mark, Julie, & Stacy as well as to their spouses, their Children and their Grand Children, I offer my utmost and profound condolences at Mum’s promotion heaven-bound. Mum, you will continue to occupy a special place in my heart. The Word declares in 2 Corinthians 5:8 that “We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord” therefore Mum we shall meet one day again. With love from your Barbados son, Chris. 🙏
