Dear Newman Family, I am sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Newman. I didn’t know him personally (and he didn’t know me), but I was a recipient of the Newman Dissertation Fund at UNL in 2017. I want to express my sincere condolences, as well as gratitude for your family’s contribution in my scholarship.

Dear Enid, Sean, Stuart and family—Ian was instrumental in the turning point of my life from general health interests to focus on public health education. When an opportunity arose to work overseas, He made it the required fieldwork even though I had not finished classroom studies. You may remember I did books in Peachtree at your house one summer for snocone business. I also tasted Enids English toffee. Somewheee in there I did surveys for Buffalo Beach Company. Ian’s guidance helped me finish masters degree despite a difficult committee and got me a job before I even graduated. I felt watched over and cared for under his protective guidance. Your family has a special place in my life history. I hope life is gentle to you now as you deal with his loss

Dear Enid and Family: Ian had a life well lived with his family and his contributions to the health and safety to many on multiple continents. His contributions will live on as a result of his efforts to teach, inform, and advocate. I was privileged to be able to work with him and call him a dear friend. He was instrumental in our work efforts. With pride, I always appreciated his words and actions of wisdom. His presence will be missed but his imprints on the lives of others will live on.

I am just devastated to hear about Ian’s passing. We had dinner together in Livingstone, Zambia in 2018 in a restaurant that served crocodile. Lots of laughter and discussion with his lovely wife and the students on my study abroad. Sadly, that was the last time that I had the pleasure of being in his company. Over the two decades that I have been at UNL, Ian headed my committee for promotion to full and nominated me to be a fellow in the Society for Applied Anthropology – two things that he did not have to do. We loved discussing cultural issues. His appreciation for anthropological perspectives resulted in me being part of the committee for one of his PhD students from Zambia. Smart, funny, and oh so kind – that was Ian Newman. I am so sorry for his family and most of all his beloved wife. Me he rest in peace.

Ian was a delightful and intelligent individual to have conversation with as we shared dinner tables at the Faculty Dinner Dance Club. He was a quality person that we are privileged to have known. They talked lovingly about taking their granddaughter on a “big” trip one year. Jerry & Helen Sellentin

I was sorry to hear of Dr. Newman’s passing. I worked for him as a student for several years, transcribing hours of audio interviews for a research project. He was always kind, professional, and created a healthy office culture. My condolences to his family.

I got to know Ian in Xi’an and his curiosity and tenacity was matched only by his humor and humility. Rest in Peace
