Margaret Washburn went to be with the Lord on May 16, 2021, at the age of 88. She was born in Birmingham, AL, in 1933, to Walter and Margaret Savage, and grew up in a loving family on a farm in Mississippi with older brother, Walter Jr., and younger sisters, Jeanne and Martie. Margaret’s life was radically changed when she gave her life to Christ at a tent revival meeting in 1951. After graduating from Brooksville High School in 1951, she enrolled at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. While at BJU, she met her future husband Andy Washburn and graduated in 1955.
Margaret and Andy were united in marriage on June 14, 1956, and moved to Tampa, FL, where Andy worked in a bank and Margaret taught first grade. They welcomed two girls to the family, Sandy in 1964 and Becky in 1965. The Washburns felt the Lord’s call to Nebraska when Andy joined the Back to the Bible staff in 1968. Margaret started teaching Kindergarten at Lincoln Christian School in 1972 and taught for 27 years at LCS. Her joy was teaching her kindergarteners about God’s world in light of God’s Word, and especially seeing so many students over the years accept Jesus as their Savior in her classroom.
In retirement, she continued supporting and mentoring the Kindergarten teachers at Lincoln Christian, enjoyed spending time with her husband Andy, her four granddaughters, Alexis, Brooke, Tiffany and Jessica, and enjoyed Bible studies with her many friends.
Margaret leaves behind her older daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Dan and their daughters Alexis (Drew) and Brooke; her younger daughter and son-in-law Becky and Keith Miles and their daughters Tiffany and Jessica Miles; sisters Jeanne Hoelz and Martie Wood, her husband Wendell; along with nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband Andy, her parents Walter and Margaret and her brother Walter, Jr.
Private family burial will be followed by a Memorial Service Thursday, May 20, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Lincoln Berean Church, 6401 South 70 Street in Lincoln.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to: Lincoln Christian School Foundation, 5801 South 84 Street, Lincoln, NE 68516, or Child Evangelism Fellowship of Lincoln, 6400 Cornhusker Highway, Suite 400, Lincoln, NE 68507.
