William R. “Dick” Stephens
William Richard “Dick” Stephens, 91 years, formerly of Omaha, passed away on December 25, 2019 in Lincoln, NE. He was born February 23, 1928 to Elmer Lewis and Gail Ethelwyn (Watt) Stephens in North Platte, NE. He attended area grade schools and graduated from North Platte High School in 1946. Dick was drafted into the military in 1945 but received a deferment to finish high school and help his father farm that summer. He entered into the US Army in September and served as a Field Lineman in the Army of Occupation until his honorable discharge in December 1947. He returned to Lincoln and graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture. He worked for Olin Corporation and lived in Atlantic, Iowa where he met Donna Nicholine “Nicky” Ohms. They were married in Atlantic, Iowa on December 28, 1958. Dick worked in the Agrichemical and fertilizer industry for Olin Corporation, Mobil Oil, and Western Petroleum for 35 years until his retirement. After this, he worked many years for an Omaha John Deere dealer selling lawn and garden equipment. During his working life the family moved to the states of Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Arkansas, and Minnesota. Dick had a life-long love of working in his shop and always had a building, fix-it, or refinishing project in the works. He also enjoyed pheasant hunting in Iowa and South Dakota.
Dick was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Omaha and gave many hours of volunteer service to various church boards and offices over the years. During retirement, he spent many hours volunteering at Concordia Jr/Sr High School in Omaha.
Dick was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Agricultural Fraternity and served in many offices at a local and national level.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Nicky of Lincoln, NE; Judy (Glen) Petersen of Burwell, NE; Jerry (Kathy) Stephens of Sioux Falls, SD; Sue (Noel) Timmons of Lincoln, NE; a brother George (Carole) Stephens of Omaha, NE. Eight grandchildren including Kurt Petersen of Burwell, NE; Brian (Sarah) Petersen of Arlington, NE; Jill (Clayton) Hensley of Fremont, NE; Alex (Kelsey) Stephens of Spearfish, SD; Kate (Dan) Prostrollo of Houston, TX; Kelly Stephens of Sioux Falls, SD; Sydney Timmons of Lincoln, NE; Samantha (Joey) Isaacson of Waverly, NE. Also 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Darcy D. Imig; brother, John R. Stephens; sister, Janet G. Sullivan and his parents.
Celebration of Life service will be 11 a.m., Friday (1-3-2020) at Roper & Sons South Lincoln Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Dr. Lincoln, NE. Cremation/No visitation. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Park.
