Robert Lee King

July 12, 1931 - September 13, 2021

Robert Lee King

Robert Lee King, 90, of Lincoln, passed away September 13, 2021.

Born July 12, 1931. You were orphaned when you were young, but we never once heard you complain or exploit that you were a victim. You persevered, and today you are loved by your wife of 68 years, your four children, their spouses, your nine grandchildren, their spouses and your 16 great grandchildren. Your family was cut down, and you built it back up. That’s how we’ll remember you.

You stole a fire truck when you were a teen and earned yourself a one-way ticket on the next train out of town. You went on to serve in the US Navy and later you became District Fire Chief in Lincoln, NE. You were a man of great courage, and you had a soft spot for those in need. That’s how we’ll remember you.

You always lived life to the fullest. You found peace in rigorous training for a triathlon, and in the solitude of gardening. You loved animals, good stories and making people laugh with your perfectly timed crossed eyes. That’s how we’ll remember you.

You were sensitive to our weaknesses, but always pushed us to make our strengths stronger. You were loyal to your family, and we were always welcome at your table. That’s how we’ll remember you.

You were a Husker fan through and through. That’s how we’ll remember you.

In the eleventh hour, you bowed your knee and prayed the sinner’s prayer. You placed the life you held onto so tightly, your blood, sweat, and tears at the foot of the cross. We admire so many things about you, your perseverance, courage, devotion, loyalty, but above all we admire you for your humility on that day. That’s how we’ll remember you.

You will live forever in our hearts, until we meet again.

Long live the King.

Robert Lee King, age 90, of Lincoln, NE, passed away September 13, 2021, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Marian, and his four children, Christine (Jeffrey) Weeks, Steven King, Peggy (Paul) Vrbka, Daniel (Teresa) King, and his eight grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Esther King, his sister Shirley Haberlan, his brother LeRoy King, his niece Suzanne Dolan, and his grandson Ryan Weeks.

Memorial service will be held Thursday, September 23rd at 2:00PM at Roper and Sons South Lincoln Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Dr (40th and Yankee Hill).

Memorials to the family for future designation.

I remember Uncle Bob as someone who always had something nice to say whenever I was around him. There were many holidays when I was younger that he complimented me on sports and complimented on our family. Condolences to all of the Kong’s from the Haberlan family.

Jordan King your grandfather was looking down with a big smile yesterday for what you said. He was proud of you & his whole family. Bob did finish the race. Very touching service.

King Family, Please accept my deepest condolences on Bob’s passing. He had been a long time friend of my dad and later worked events at UNL with both my mom and dad. He was a great fan of boxing and every time I crossed paths with him he wanted to know what was new in the ring. He was a North Lincoln guy and friend to all he met. He will be missed. I will keep you and Bob in my thoughts and prayers.

What a man! I got to know Bob during my time as a student-athlete at Nebraska. I was injured my senior year and he kept me great company and often encouraged me with scriptures as well as ensuring me that my greatest impact on earth was ahead of me and my injury was just preparing me for life. On my senior night, he accompanied my mother and me by walking me onto the court. It was so important for me to have him be a part of that day because, without him, I wouldn’t have made it through the year. I know I’m just one of many student-athletes whose lives Bob touched but he left an indelible impression on my life and I am so thankful for the time God allowed us to be close.
