Obituary

Phyllis Wunderlich

April 7, 1937 - December 8, 2018

Phyllis Wunderlich

Phyllis Wunderlich passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 8th at The Mandarin. She was born on April 17, 1937 to Roy and Vera (Lewis) Powers bringing much joy to them as their new family began. Phyllis grew up in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High in 1955; always mindful of what it meant to be a Link. Music was a major part of her life and Phyllis played the flute, organ, violin and was a master of the marimba, often playing duets with her sister whom she recorded a 78 rpm with. She took her love of music to UNL, where she played flute in both marching and concert bands. She was a proud member of the Towne Club and majored in business administration.

She first met her husband to be, Don at a popular square dancing event. They fell in love and were married on September 21st, 1958 and enjoyed the next 58 years together until Don’s passing. Phyllis was employed with the Maynard Mills Insurance Company and then Continental Western until her retirement. She was such a valued employee that Continental Western agreed to let her take summers off to be at home with her children.
Phyllis was also known for her amazing work with needle and thread and was able to create many wonderful and highly cherished works throughout her life. For many years she would hand sew beautiful Christmas ornaments for the children at the F St. Community Center to take home for their own trees. She made many blankets for the Linus Project which provides hand sewn blankets for newborns. Tirelessly helping others with her loving and caring ways she ran both a Cub Scout den, a troop of brownies and volunteered at Meadow Lane as a teacher’s aide after retirement. It was only through her gentle sternness that her children were able to complete the paper routes that they wanted so badly. She was always active and walked many miles with her good friends in the Senior Striders. Phyllis was a dedicated member of St. Marks United Methodist Church for decades and loved seeing how the congregation has grown over the years. She also loved her Huskers, faithfully donning her gear and hanging out her husker flag for every game day. Phyllis was a loving and kind person that took great joy in her family and friends.

Phyllis is survived by son, Duane; daughter Janelle Wunderlich and son-in-law, Rick Hoppe; grandchildren, Nathan Hoppe and Madeleine Hoppe, her partner Josh Wolfe and great grandchild, Harper Wolfe; and sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Roger Mertens. Preceded in death by her parents and husband Don.
