As a Cadet Nurse she worked 5 years at University Hospital in Omaha as a floor supervising nurse and student nurse instructor.

While working in Omaha she met a WWII veteran and medical student, Richard (Dick) Carl Toren. She served as a Pink Lady at Lincoln General Hospital, a Cub Scout leader, a Red Cross CPR instructor, and volunteered for Morrill Hall and Meals on Wheels. Mary was an avid reader, and cherished her time at the Lincoln Public Libraries, particularly Gere Library.

She will most want to be remembered for her love for her church, her family, and her wonderful friends. They were all such an important part of her life.
