Maria Bertha Wells

Maria Bertha Wells, daughter of Modesto Urueta and Juanita del Carpio Urueta, was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, South America on August 9, 1919 and passed away on March 4, 2019 in her home in Lincoln, NE. Maria attended the Colegio Americano, a Presbyterian school in Barranquilla through the 12th grade.

After high school, Maria continued her education at the University in Bogota, Colombia. She was awarded a one-year scholarship to Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA from the Foreign Mission of the Presbyterian Church. Subsequently, she was offered a scholarship from the Institute of International Education and transferred to Western College in Oxford, OH.

While at Western, she met her future husband, John (Jack) Wells, and they began a long courtship. She attained her bachelor’s degree in 1946 and returned to Colombia to teach at the Presbyterian School from 1946 to 1954.

In 1954, she married John F. Wells in a small wedding at Westminster Presbyterian Chapel in Lincoln. They were married for 62 years. She enjoyed many trips with Jack to Mexico and to their condo in Estes Park.
Maria was a longtime member of Eastridge Presbyterian Church, a member of the Navy Wives, a 64-year member of P.E.O. Chapter CS-DK. She was also a dedicated, charter member at Prairie Life Fitness Center.

Maria is preceded in death by her husband, John F. Wells, parents, 4 sisters and 4 brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Anna (Randall) Meier; son, John E. Wells and Pam Craig; grandchildren, Jennifer (Gary) Olsen, Bradley Meier, Julianne (Eric) Spry, Brett Meier, Christopher “C.J.” (Dara) Wells, Whitney (Jason) Miller; 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday (3-11-19) at Eastridge Presbyterian Church, 1135 Eastridge Dr, Lincoln, NE. Public visitation with family greeting friends will be 4-6 p.m., Sunday (3-10-19) at Roper and Sons ‘O’ Street Chapel, 4300 ‘O’ St., Lincoln, NE. Burial at Wyuka Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Eastridge Presbyterian Church.
