Lucile Bernice Denning

Lucile Bernice Denning, age 95 of Central City, Nebraska, died Sunday, July 28, 2019 at Arlington Place of Red Oak, Iowa.

Lucile was born December 18, 1923 to Sherman and Aletha (Standley) Henriksen in Lincoln, Nebraska. She grew up on a farm west of Eagle, NE, and graduated at the top of her class from Eagle High School in 1941. Lucile began secretarial work at the University of Nebraska Alumni Office after graduating from Lincoln School of Commerce in 1942. She enjoyed being a USO hostess and was a member of Alpha Pi Omega, a business sorority in Lincoln.

Lucile married Norman Verle Denning, March 14, 1947 at Walton, Nebraska. They farmed east of Lincoln (College View), near Waverly, and in 1957, bought a farm north of Central City, NE. She returned to secretarial work, working for 30 years at Central City High School, where she proudly used her skill of writing shorthand.

Lucile attended the Central City Evangelical Free Church where she was involved in choir and childcare during Bible study. She enjoyed choir and state music contest in high school; playing the piano for her enjoyment and singing with the Lone Tree Singers in Central City. Lucile was an avid Cornhusker football and volleyball fan.

After retiring, Lucile remained active in the community and volunteered at the Thrift Shop in Central City. She enjoyed traveling to new places with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed life and loved her Lord and Savior. Lucile was a friend to all and was known for her sweet smile, encouraging spirit, keen sense of humor and fondness for jokes.

Lucile is survived by her 5 children, Galen (Lucinda) Denning, Coweta, Oklahoma; Leslie Denning, Central City; Barry (Denise) Denning, Central City; Laurie (Stuart) Peterson, Stanton, IA; and Janet (Steve) Mohrmann, Dardenne Prairie, MO; 7 grandchildren, Mike, Alana, Justin, Denae, Kate, Neil, Amy, and Kara; 6 great grandchildren, Micole, Ashlyn, Brenna, Cayson, Aspen, Griffon; Brother, Alan Henriksen, Sister Lois Anderson, nieces and nephews. Lucile was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman; and brothers Ralph Henriksen, and Raymond Henriksen.

A funeral service will be held August 5, 10:30 a.m. at Roper and Sons Funeral Home, 4300 “O” St., Lincoln, NE. The family will be available to receive guests one hour before service. Burial in Lincoln Memorial Park, 6800 S. 14th St. in Lincoln will follow the service.

Central City friends are invited to visit with Lucile’s family on Sunday, August 4th from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Heartland Evangelical Free Church, 1620 19th St in Central City.
