Dwight LaVerne Ohs

Dwight LaVerne Ohs, 85, of Lincoln, passed away May 12, 2018. Born May 31, 1932 at home in Clay County, NE to Conrad and Ella (Ham) Ohs. He attended Country School near Friend, NE and graduated from Friend High School in 1949. Dwight then moved to Lincoln and attended Nebraska Wesleyan University, graduating in 1953 with a BA in Education. He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. Dwight married Sara Lee Slosson on July 26, 1953.
He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Sara Lee; and their children Larry (Betty) Ohs, Lincoln; Bradley (Sandy) Ohs, Palmer, AK; Carmen (Bob) Shively, Lincoln; and Cortney (Holly) Ohs, Vero Beach, FL. They have 8 grandchildren, Ryan Ohs, Matthew Ohs, Logan (Anjli) Ohs, Michael Shively, Nicole Shively, Spencer Ohs, Sydney Ohs, and Brogan Ohs.

Dwight was a proud alumnus of Nebraska Wesleyan University, serving as President of the Alumni Board and a member of the Board of Governors. He began his insurance career during 1955 in Friend, NE and then served as District Manager for agencies in Crete and Columbus, NE. His insurance career moved them to Lincoln, NE in 1964 to work for Midwest Life Insurance Company. He worked with agencies all over the country, visited Hawaii 29 times, and made many lifelong friends. He earned his CLU in 1968 and his ChFC in 1986. He was a member of the Nebraska Association of Life Underwriters, President of the North Central Training Directors Association, and board member of the Lincoln Chapter of the American Society of Chartered Life Underwriters. Dwight joined Ameritas in 1979 and was Vice President of Marketing Administration until he retired in 1993. In retirement, he enjoyed working at Farmers Mutual Insurance Company as a crop adjuster until 1997. Dwight was an active member of St. Marks United Methodist Church since 1964, serving on The Foundation, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday school teacher, and many other church boards.

Dwight loved the farm, hunting, horses, and was an avid gardener. He loved to play golf and hit a hole in one on the 15th hole at Crooked Creek Golf Club in 2001. He loved his family and could be found on nights and weekends at his childrens’ and grandchildrens’ ball games, cross country meets, swim meets, dance recitals, and Scouting events. Dwight loved making things and started a tradition of giving a handmade holiday decoration or furniture piece to family members every year. His family always looked forward to this annual surprise!

Funeral service will be 10:30. Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 8550 Pioneers Blvd., Lincoln, NE. Family will greet friends one hour before service at the church. Burial Rosewood Cemetery, Palmyra, NE.
