Obituary

Donald Ray Wehr

August 30, 1965 - November 23, 2018

Thomas R. Gewecke

Donald Ray Wehr of Lincoln, NE, age 53, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on Friday, November 23, 2018. Don was born in Lincoln to John and Roberta (Godsey) Wehr. He grew up there with his siblings, Greg and Mickie, until 1978 when the family moved to Tempe, AZ to open Books, Etc. In 1983 he returned to his beloved hometown and the close connections of family and friends there. Sharing the love for books his father had, Don worked at Lee Booksellers until they closed in 2009. His voracious appetite for reading and helpful nature made him an indispensable resource for people shopping for books. Since 2010 he has worked behind the scenes in Hobby Town corporate customer service to stores across the country.

As a child, Don enjoyed camping trips with family and Boy Scouts. He spent countless hours reading, especially Science Fiction and Fantasy. He loved music, and often listened to groups with great harmonies such as the Beatles. He enjoyed singing in choirs at church and school, and performed in an a cappella ensemble in high school.

Throughout his life he enjoyed playing games of all kinds with family and friends. He loved to play with dogs, and with children of all ages. He shared his love of books by reading aloud to niece Sarah. He shared his love of games by teaching younger cousins how to play, never holding back to just let them win, but also coaching them to succeed. He regularly played games of all kinds with family and friends (which he won so often as to generate the number one game rule of “get Don!”) His patience and willingness to play with young and old, skilled and unskilled, was among his most deeply appreciated qualities.

Don was known among his friends as Dragonmaster, for his fondness for all things dragon and his skill in fantasy gaming; and also as The Computer, for his laser-like focus in making calculations and his vast compendium of knowledge. The family knew him as many things: son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and the baker of Grandma’s brownies and pumpkin bread.

Don dearly loved his family, and many close friends were like family to him. He was kind and generous, willing to go out of his way to help others. Don’s cheerful demeanor and wry sense of humor were a light to those around him. He was much loved and will be sorely missed.
Don was pre-deceased by his father, John Wehr, and several extended family members. He is survived by his mother, Roberta Wehr, brother Gregory Wehr, sister & brother-in-law Michelle & Aaron Pulliam, niece Sarah Pulliam, extended family and many friends.

Services on Saturday, 12/1 at 10 AM with viewing at 9 at Roper and Sons South Lincoln Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Dr., Lincoln, NE 68516 with interment at Cedarview cemetery in Doniphan, NE ~1:30 PM.
