Obituary

Ronald Fredric Smith

May 3, 1938 - November 12, 2018

Ronald Fredric Smith

Ronald Fredric Smith was born in Lincoln on May 3, 1938 to Bud and Dorothy (Heuke) Smith. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a bachelors degree in business administration and was an active member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He served in the Navy in both California and Alaska as a cryptographer. In 1966 he married his wife of 52 years, Nancy (Nelson) after she asked him to marry her.

He began his career with his father’s company, United Rent-Alls, flying around the country to check on the stores. After URA was sold, he and Nancy started Interiors Diversified, an interior design shop and furniture renting business. Occasionally he worked on such interesting side projects as marketing Reinhold Marxhausen’s FLURRY. Subsequently, he became a realtor at Austin Realty, then earned his CCIM certification after founding Ron Smith & Associates, a commercial real estate company.

His children remember a dad who was warm, insightful, stubborn and loving. He enjoyed the great outdoors and was a bird hunter and an avid fly fisherman teaching 4-H members the sport. A love of Brittany Spaniels meant you might catch sight of him walking to the back of Herkimer Lake behind his home or hunting with family friends. Both Ron (trumpet) and Nancy (piano) loved jazz and filled our home with music not to mention a fine dinner party.

He was president of both the Nebraska CCIM chapter and Cornhusker Fly Fishers. Life member of the Sheldon Art Association.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, and a sister, Sondra Arndt and two children, Seth of Green Bay, WI and Jessica (LuLu) and husband Matthew Landkamer of Portland, OR. He is survived by 5 adored grandchildren, Zachary, Nelson, Calder, Georgia and Vivian.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2018 at First-Plymouth Church, 2000 D Street, Lincoln.

Memorials may be directed to The Nature Conservancy of Nebraska or to the family for future designation.
