Obasi Nwojo Onuoha
Obasi Nwojo Onuoha, one of God’s chosen sons, was called to his heavenly home on July 28, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones. Born to Ohara and Ori (Ukpubi) Onuoha in Abiriba, Nigeria on December 20, 1940.
Obasi moved to Lincoln in 1962 to attend the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He graduated with high distinction from UNL earning a BS degree in mechanical and electrical engineering in 1966. Obasi excelled scholastically winning numerous awards in linear and multivariable calculus. He was a member of: Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor Society, UNL Student Council and the UNL International Association. He was also a two time champion in the bench press for his UNL club weight lifting team.
Obasi was a wise, honorable, generous and humble man, filled with integrity, extending grace and mercy to everyone. He loved the USA, cherishing its history and believing in the ideals upon which it was founded and to which it continues to aspire. He loved making memories with family and friends including: attending church, Bible studies, playing spades, traveling, attending graduations, activities of children and grandchildren, attending Nebraska Football games, watching the news, reading his Bible, walking and running in the park. He knew no strangers.
Obasi was employed by Pfizer and Burlington Northern Sante Fe. He was known as “Obi-Wan”, a friend to many. His charm, smile and love for Jesus were infectious. He loved to work and rarely missed a day.
He is preceded in death by his parents Ohara and Ori Onuoha, brother John Onuoha, sister Ada Onuoha, aunt Rachel Woolridge, grandson Joshua Church, brother-in-law Rayford Jones, grandson Bryan Oekel.
Obasi will always be remembered by his loving wife of 50 years, Bernice Onuoha. Children: Alice Bowling Wirth (Dr. Michael Wirth) Charles H. Bowling II, Bernice (Sue) Bowling Hill (Sonny Hill), Pamela Bowling Church (Merle Church), Pateath Bowling Herndon (Paul Herndon), Angelia Onuoha, Obasi John Onuoha, Oneike (Niki) Onuoha (Daniel Jarzynka), Karen Taylor Bowling, Natalie Wittman Onuoha. Grandchildren: Michelle Wirth, Jonathan Bowling (Kayti Bowling), Matthew Church (Ashley Church), Tiffani Childress (Ron Childress), Dr. Jordan Bowling, Dr. Christina Wirth-Hawkins (Craig Hawkins), Michael Church, Patea Hill, Daniel Church, Alison Hill (Juliane Glasco), Cameron Van Hoose (Matthew Van Hoose), Adriea Herndon, Obasi Onuoha, Alexandria Herndon, Kennedy Onuoha, Vanessa Onuoha, Sylvia Onuoha, Makenna Jarzynka, Xyanna Onuoha, Xyairah Onuoha. Great Great Grandchildren: Mia Bowling, Harper Rosenstiel, Zoey Bowling, Walker Bowling, Logan Oekel, Tatum Bowling, Austin Hawkins, Easton Childress, Caleb Oekel, Ashton Hawkins, and Holden Church. Cousins: Essie Vernon, Dessie Brown, Doris Owens, Faye Portilla and Greg Hamilton. Adopted Families: Brown’s, Davis’s, Hayne’s, Jone’s, Kirkland’s, Lawrence’s, Mardenborough’s, Maxey’s.
Obasi’s family wishes to thank family and friends for their prayers, visits, food, notes, and love along with Bryan West staff for their impeccable care with special thanks to Dr. Stanley Okosun.
Funeral: 1 pm Saturday, 8/5, Lincoln City Church, 5001 South 1st Street. Rev. Dr. Jerry David officiating. Burial: Wyuka Cemetery. Visitation: 6-8 pm Friday, 8/4, Roper & Sons Mortuary, 4300 O Street, with personal tributes and music at 7 pm.
