Marilyn L. Oehlerking

Marilyn Louise (Miller) Oehlerking, 82, Murdock, Nebraska, died January 22, 2018 in Lincoln. She was born April 30, 1935 to Elmer and Louise Miller of Murdock, Nebraska. Marilyn and Myron grew up near each other, both graduating from Murdock High School, then Westmar College in Iowa. She married Myron on July 19, 1956. Marilyn graduated from college, receiving her teaching degree and started teaching in Le Mars, Iowa while Myron was serving in the army and returned to finish his college degree. They moved to Adams, Nebraska, where she started the first ever Kindergarten class and Myron was teaching and coaching in the high school. Marilyn and Myron continued their journey and moved to Lincoln in 1963. In 1991, they moved back to the Murdock area to be able to enjoy farm life again and her fondness of animals, especially cats.

One of Marilyn’s greatest loves was teaching. She put her heart and soul into planning lessons and working with her students. Marilyn started teaching as an associate teacher at Calvert Elementary school in 1972. She continued teaching 3rd and 4th grade students at Calvert for 32 years. She was a lifetime member of the PTA and served as president. Marilyn continued to teach until age 72. After retiring in 2007, she volunteered at Calvert and Elmwood-Murdock Elementary. Marilyn always said she never quit teaching.

Church was so important to Marilyn. Both Marilyn and Myron were Charter members of South Gate United Methodist Church, where they set up a Children’s and Youth Sunday School program. Marilyn was the Children’s Council chairperson and taught Sunday School for 50 years. They led multiple youth mission trips to McCurdy School in New Mexico and Red Bird Mission in Kentucky.

Marilyn was a true coach’s wife. She was always at Myron’s games and loved building relationships with the girls and their families.

Marilyn is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Barb and Dennis Nelson of Lincoln, Myrna and Dan Bornemeier of Elmwood. Grandchildren: Kristin (Nelson) and Joseph McNerny of Lincoln, Clint Bornemeier and fiancé, Bethany Miller, Tanner Bornemeier all of Elmwood.
