Howard Warren Ottoson

Howard Warren Ottoson, 97, of Lincoln passed away August 5, 2018. Howard was born on a farm near Detroit Lakes Minnesota on September 18, 1920 to John and Hilma Ottoson.

Survived by his wife Margaret; children: Keith Ottoson, John (Alta) Ottoson, Dave (Lori) Ottoson, 10 grandchildren: Stephanie Hunter, Scott Ottoson, Lisa Dunbar, Melissa Johnson, Jenna Ottoson, Bryan Ottoson, Kevin Ottoson, Ginger Ottoson Rodriguez, Kate Ottoson and Mark Ottoson and 17 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dennis and Kenneth Ottoson and two sisters, Shirley Forthern and Fern Gotta and his daughter-in-law, Jackie Ottoson.

He obtained his B.S. in Agricultural Education from the University of Minnesota in 1942. While serving as a Lieutenant in the Navy during World War II, Howard married Margaret in 1944. After his service, Howard received his M.S. degrees in Agricultural Economics from the University of Minnesota and then worked for a bank in St. Paul. Howard was awarded a Ph.D degree from Iowa State University in 1952. Howard worked for the University of Nebraska in a variety of capacities; Professor of Agricultural Economics, Dean of the College of Agriculture, etc. before retiring in 1985 as Executive Vice President and Provost. Outside of work, Howard had a variety of interests, including gardening, bridge, reading, golf, fishing, carpentry and traveling. Margaret and Howard traveled to Europe in their nineties but were especially fond of enjoying their summers at the “cabin”, a lake home on Pelican Lake in northern Minnesota. He was a thoughtful and loving man.

Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Monday (8-13-18) Eastridge Presbyterian Church, 1135 Eastridge Drive.

Memorials in lieu of flowers to UNL Foundation or Eastridge Presbyterian Church.

No Visitation.
