Douglas S. Zatechka

Douglas S. Zatechka, PhD, 75, passed away December 14, 2018 after a brief battle with lung cancer. Born January 2, 1943 in Marshalltown, Iowa to Vivian (Hartman) and Donald Zatechka.

Douglas was a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and Michigan State University and retired as Director of Housing and former assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs for the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He received many awards during his 47 year career in higher education including the Outstanding Educator Crystal Apple Award from MSU, and the Louise Pound-George Howard Distinguished Career Service Award from UNL. The current housing office at UNL is named in his honor the Douglas S. Zatechka University Housing Office. He was an active member of First Lutheran Church and former board member of Tabitha Health along with several other organizations in Lincoln.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane (Johnson), three sons: D. Steven Zatechka, Jr. (Jenny) of Memphis, TN, Robert Zatechka (Jennifer) and Jonathan Zatechka (Sarah) all of Omaha, along with seven grandchildren, brother-in-law and sisters-in-law Larry and Pam Johnson of Columbus, OH and Terrie Johnson of Burlington, IA, niece and nephew. Preceded in death by his parents and infant brother Donald C. Zatechka.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday (12-20-18) First Lutheran Church, 1551 S. 70th with Rev. Dan Warnes officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to UNL Foundation, Michigan State University College of Education or First Lutheran Church.

No Visitation/Cremation.
